Youtube wants to expand advertising further

Those who watch YouTube on television will soon have to get used to a new feature. Ads should also play when you pause the video.

There was a time when you could still watch videos on the internet without annoying commercial breaks. In the meantime, that is hardly possible – unless you pay. Youtube now wants to expand its advertisements even further.

For some time now YouTube has not only contained more or less amateurish clips, but also series and other formats produced in a very complex and high-quality way. As a result, many people are increasingly watching YouTube on television.

Like streaming in the web browser, advertising on YouTube also runs on television – except for subscribers to YouTube Premium. When playing the streaming service on the TV, the duration of the advertisement should be increased from 15 to 30 seconds. YouTube’s parent company, Google, announced this during the “Youtube Brandcast” event.

That doesn’t change much about the actual viewing – because instead of two 15-second clips, only one 30-second clip plays. You can’t skip the ads, which is already the case.

Ad shows despite paused video

But what’s new: in the future, advertisements will also be played when the video is paused. The current stream should then appear in a small window and the ad should play along the way. You should be able to disable them if you need to. Still, the new advertising strategy could be disruptive if, for example, you pause the stream because of a phone call, but advertising is still running.

It is not yet known when Youtube plans to implement the new strategy. If you don’t feel like advertising, you can get the premium subscription – or install an ad blocker while you still can.

Because Google is currently testing a feature that recognizes ad blockers. Users are then prompted to disable the block or pay for ad-free use of the service. (t online)
