At Volkswagen, the name says it all: For people, cars have always been a belief. But even Europe’s largest automaker, represented on the Swiss market for 75 years, has occasionally created very special vehicles, as evidenced by the following seven models:

Mille Miglia Beetle
This Bug was originally built as an “Oval” in 1956: It’s what the fan community calls the bagel bug, it’s not the only one anymore as there’s no center bar in the rear window. In 2012, the revised diamond green Beetle was used by two Australian journalists at the Mille Miglia. But the 30 hp couldn’t keep up with other cars, so Volkswagen’s classic department fitted the Beetle with a 70 hp boxer engine from the venerable Porsche 356 A. For the classic tour, in addition to the engine, the chassis and brakes have also been sharpened.

Karmann Ghia Type 34
The Karmann-Ghia Type 34 is also known as the big Karmann-Ghia. The model was built by Karmann in Osnabrück (D) on behalf of VW and is based on the VW Type 3 with which it shares the platform, including axles and drive. Serial production of the vehicle began in 1961 with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine producing 45 horsepower and providing a top speed of 137 km/h. This was followed by two more variants with more powerful engines, and then the Type 34 was discontinued without a successor. Only 42,505 vehicles were produced until 1969.

SP2
In 1972, the SP2 went into production based on the Brazilian VW 1600 Variant platform. However, the engine was a 1.7-liter four-cylinder boxer engine that produced 65 hp and reached a top speed of 161 km/h. The SP2 needed a whopping 17.4 seconds to reach 100 km/h, which may explain its small number of customers. When production stopped in 1976, only 10,206 were produced, of which about 680 were exported. Fun fact: the abbreviation “SP” is supposed to represent São Paulo. However, according to other sources, it can also mean Special Project, Sports Prototype, Special Performance or SPORT-Car.

chorrado
The VW Corrado was produced by Karmann from 1988 to 1995 in Osnabrück (D). What made the sports coupé special was that the rear wing could be automatically retracted and extended. Various variations with engines from 1.8 liters to 2.9 liters produced from 115 hp to 190 hp. The top speed of the most powerful variant was 235 km/h. Corrado has rolled off the assembly line 97,535 times in eight years. Overall, it was a technical mix of the Golf 2 and 3 and the Passat B3 and B4.

Gulf country
The Golf Country is considered the ancestor of today’s SUV models and was once offered as a “Golf Montana” study. When dealers received a large number of orders after their presentation, VW decided to mass-produce the car. Introduced in 1990 and produced by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Graz (Austria) until 1991, the Country was the four-door trim level of the Golf CL Synchro. The 1.8-liter engine also came from the Golf CL Synchro and produced 98 hp. The body was increased by 120 millimeters with a tubular frame, a tubular frame was fitted to the front, and two tubular tubing frames were used on the rear bumpers to the left and right of the folding spare wheel holder. The land features of the county were still moderate.

blue sport
In 2009, the concept car was presented at the international motor show in Detroit (USA). When designing the Bluesport, the emphasis was placed on lightweight construction so that the athlete only weighs 1200 kilograms. Behind the two sports seats, the 180 hp 2-liter diesel mid-engine provided a lot of power. Maximum torque of 350 Nm is transmitted to the rear wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. Acceleration to 100 km/h took 6.6 seconds and the top speed was 226 km/h. Thanks to the automatic start-stop system and recovery, a low consumption of 4.3 liters per 100 kilometers was achieved. However, Bluesport only had one run.

ID. R
Electric race car VW ID. The R was built in 2018 and was competed by Romain Dumas (45) in the Pikes Peak hill climb that same year. Dumas broke the track record in the US state of Colorado with a time of 7:57.148 minutes. The electric race car has two electric motors and therefore delivers 680 hp (500 kW). Maximum torque of 650 Nm is transmitted to both axles. The ultra-flat carbon body has wide front, side and rear wings to create plenty of downforce. With an unladen weight of 1100 kilograms, the vehicle reaches 100 km/h in 2.3 seconds and has a top speed of 240 km/h.
