The time has come: the current generation of the Porsche Cayenne has been around since 2017 – but is now being polished. Six years between launch and beautification for the second half of its lifespan is a very long time in the automotive industry. Why did Porsche take so long? First, because it wasn’t necessary. With around 96,000 units in 2022, one in three new Porsches was a Cayenne.
Second, the five-seater vehicle needs to last longer than the normal eight years. Its slightly larger, all-electric successor will be introduced in 2026. Only then will the current generation remain on the market for several more years at the same time, as not everyone in Europe and certainly the rest of the world will not be buying a Stromer. Maybe even with another refresh.
As before, the Cayenne is offered as a classic high-roof SUV and a flatter coupé. Porsche’s series manager, Michael Schätzle, says that never before has so many changes been made in a model revision. Visual changes are new air intakes at the front, a newly folded hood and plate that slides back into the bumper. Effect: Cayenne now looks even wider. But technically much more has happened: Cayenne has been repositioned in these five disciplines.
wheel projector
By law, a car headlight cannot shine more than 600 meters. That’s why Porsche is pushing the resolution of the new Cayenne instead of increasing the range: two thumbnail-size chips with 16,384 tiny LEDs each shine in each headlight. They can be turned on and off individually or dimmed in 1024 steps. Like a camera, lens systems throw light wide or particularly far.
So you always drive with full high beam, but oncoming traffic or those ahead can be cut off from the light cone by sharp edges. Cool: On narrow construction site lanes on the highway, the cone of light is two meters wide, just like the car. So you can see where things can get stuck. And pedestrians on the side of the road flash lightly for the driver to notice.
enough with the key
Porsche turned the cockpit inside out. This is the end of the ignition lock, which is legendary on the left – it is started with a button. The shift lever is also gone, instead you choose the direction of travel with a kind of toggle switch. Nickname: Braun Razor because he looks the same. Special tribute to the cooled smartphone compartment for inductive charging: Charging will never be stopped again because the phone is so hot.
The digital cockpit of the electric sports car Taycan also takes its place in the Cayenne. The curved 12.6-inch screen displays instruments against the sunlight without the annoying little roof and no longer glare. For Porsche, it should offer cost savings compared to analog displays. The air conditioning is now operated via the glass-enclosed center console, but you have to look down and move your arm away from the steering wheel. It looks stylish, but used to be more intuitive.
Three is enough at first
There are three drive versions to start with, and more are likely to follow: The base is a V6 with 353 hp (260 kW), above which is the e-hybrid with a V6 and electric motor and system output of 470 hp (346 kW). . Thanks to the 50 percent larger battery, the latter can now travel up to 90 kilometers on all-electricity and fully charge in less than 150 minutes with the new 11 kilowatt charger. When it comes to torque, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is ahead and impacts the roadway through the responsive interaction of the combustion engine and electric motor.
The top model for now is a completely revised four-liter twin-turbo V8 with 474 hp (349 kW). There are now single-scroll turbochargers that tolerate exhaust gas temperatures above 1000 degrees Celsius and therefore poor combustion with less fuel. This also reduces consumption. Of course the V8 is powerful – but the PHEV is still more agile. But the Passé is the former top-of-the-line turbo version – only available in the US for emissions reasons.
steel or air?
Two chassis with steel or air spring are available. The first has new shock absorbers that can respond differently during compression and rebound. You can really feel it because the two-ton truck hardly sways and stays stable even on tight bends. Combined with the direct steering, the five-foot ship feels much smaller and more manageable. On some XL SUVs you feel like you’re sitting in a car – on the Cayenne you can feel the car almost like in a 911.
The air suspension also adapts variably to the driving situation and gets out of potholes a little softer. Your biggest advantage: Combined with the driving programs, it now provides a noticeably greater distinction between very comfortable and demanding-sporty. However, it is subject to an extra fee.
fun on board
Ferrari has been around for a long time, and there are also more expensive Mercedes electric vehicles: a passenger display can be ordered optionally on the Cayenne. In terms of navigation or infotainment, it can do the same as its larger counterpart in the middle, but it also displays driving data such as the speedometer, drive mode or G-forces. Classic television is not possible (as with Mercedes), but your favorite TV shows can be streamed here, provided you have a subscription. A special film ensures that only the passenger can see it and that the driver is not distracted. This is classier than an aftermarket tablet holder, but do you really need it? The passenger also has access to the central touchscreen and can easily look at the speedometer thanks to the new cockpit. Also, the stomach should get little pleasure from the movie on a fast ride.
Let’s start with the new Cayenne in Switzerland in July. The regular SUV version is cheaper anyway, while the coupe version costs extra: the basic version starts at 102,100 francs; as a coupe at least 107,100 francs must be paid. However, on the upward scale of open options, it could easily be more.
