before the trip
This test cart is a wheeled cry: “Look! I! Throw!” Ametrine Metallic on the list, Pop Eggplant for paint, 23-inch wheels, endless chrome and a glossy light gray interior shine from the BMW individual shelf.
And then there’s the Iconic Glow lighting for the front double kidney grille, which is almost free with the top-of-the-line M60i xDrive. Free is relative though: our test car comes in at 196,510 francs with all options included. That means taking a deep breath and being brave before you enter the narrow exit of our test car garage.
on the street
Head “What is this about?” he asks, but the stomach must admit: there is something in it. More travel comfort is hardly conceivable. Cinema is only available on a tablet instead of a mega-monitor like in the 7 Series sedan, however: this view, these seats, this calm. Three rows of seats are standard, but our test car doesn’t have a middle second row of seats, making it a six-seater saloon with plenty of legroom. The panoramic roof lets light in along its entire length, your feet sink into the high floor mats, and the optional sound system from Bowers & Wilkens simulates an entire concert hall.
Under the hood, the 4.4-liter V8 packs a whopping 530 hp (390 kW) of power, but can also roar when you need full throttle. Even the weight of a six-seater can’t slow you down. In fact, the X7 was designed primarily for lush US highways. But it also works great on European highways.
That was great
Without the price tag, the X7 would be the perfect family car. With a maximum of two cubic meters of luggage space, you can take half of the flat with you on vacation. Practical: the horizontal section of the electric tailgate. You can put heavy things on the floor and push them in, which will not strain your back. There are also points for the new infotainment system with space and a curved touchscreen – as BMW still provides the classic rotary pushbutton that provides excellent, distraction-free operation.
Thanks to real-time data, the integrated navigation system is once again more precise than the smartphone app, and the adaptive cruise control variably adjusts the distance kept according to speed. And there are more than enough shelves.
that was weak
But we can’t turn our heads either: on narrow country roads, when the milk truck comes towards us, its dimensions make our hands sweat. In multi-storey car parks, the memory function has little use for completing the parking process autonomously – you must first circle the space yourself. And to begin with, the X7 could be a little more dosed.
The M60i only has electric motors for window regulators; even a tiny mild hybrid will not help consumption. No wonder the test average was 13.5 l/100 km, 14 deciles higher than the factory specification promised. Not surprising considering its weight. When it launched in 2019, the Blick test at the time had a 400 hp four-turbo diesel that hit a true 7.8 l/100 km. But emissions regulations and diesel skepticism have put an end to it. No complaints about the price: logically, such a car is designed quite a few for a well-heeled customer.
it remains
The ease of actuation of such a piece. Realizing that in just a few days you can easily get used to and appreciate a car of this scale. Experience how calming a light gray interior and aubergine paint can be. But also insight that the spirit of the times will most likely turn its nose up.
The X7 M60i xDrive is becoming a symbol of how quickly the automotive world is changing. It was still a luxury statement right after BMW’s sister brand Rolls-Royce when it launched in 2019, but for all its comfort it now looks a bit outdated. But BMW has already shown how the luxury and performance dilemma can be solved today with the all-electric i7. And as a 352 hp diesel, the X7 will suffice with 7.7 l/100 km according to factory specifications.
