Soon the smaller of the Porsche series will be powered only by electricity. But for the current generation finale, Zuffenhausen (D) has another fat second appearance. The new 718 Spyder RS is the most powerful Boxster of all time and comes with the driver package of the Cayman GT4 RS. The four-liter, six-cylinder boxer also delivers a whopping 500 hp (368 kW) in the Spyder, which only has to move 1.4 tonnes of curb weight. The seven-speed dual-clutch transmission enables the Spyder RS to take off from zero in 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 308 km/h. Standard consumption: 13.0 liters of Super per 100 kilometers.
At 1410 kilograms, the Spyder RS is 40 kilograms lighter than a regular 718 Spyder. In particular, it’s thinner with a soft top made of single-layer fabric, weighing just 18.3 kilograms including the mechanics, i.e. 7.6 kilograms lighter than the 718 Spyder and 16.5 kilograms than the 718 Boxster. Anyone who schedules tours only in bright sunlight and puts their roof in the garage saves another eight pounds.
Matching watch is available as an option
The chassis of the 718 Spyder RS also comes from the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS and offers active dampers, particularly sporty tuning and 30 millimeter lowering; also torque steering with mechanical rear axle differential lock. More torque is delivered to the rear wheel outside of the curve for more direct steering behavior in corners. Ride height, camber, track and stabilizer are variably adjustable. The two-seater rolls on 20-inch forged aluminum wheels. Compared to the closed Cayman GT4 RS, the spring and damper ratios have been lowered to achieve a more typical cabriolet configuration.
If the regular Spyder pack isn’t enough, the Über-718 can be equipped with what’s called the Weissach pack. Among other things this offers extra-light magnesium wheels and titanium tailpipes for the exhaust system. Inside, the cockpit is covered in a special microfibre fabric and a model-specific Porsche watch sits on top. Costing at least 190,700 francs, the Porsche 718 Spyder RS will be officially unveiled in June at Porsche’s 75th anniversary party.
