We’ll admit: If we had to spontaneously guess which is the best-selling car of all time, we’d probably guess at a Volkswagen. Probably on a Ford too – Western glasses. But neither VW nor Ford has produced an absolute bestseller of all cars. Winner again – Toyota. Again? Yes – we reported last week at this point that the Japanese had once again claimed the title of world’s best-selling car in 2021. The SUV RAV4 topped the global bestseller charts last year with 1.13 million sales – followed by the compact Toyota Corolla.
He is also the one who can rightfully call himself the king of cars, at least when it comes to sales figures. Because the Corolla, which is sold as a hatchback or station wagon in Europe, but mostly as a limousine in the USA or Asia, has been produced since 1966 and reached an enormous sales figure of 47.5 million in its 56-year service life! On average, Toyota produces about 850,000 Corollas each year – the Japanese compact model also leads the way in these statistics.
VW is only 3rd
US manufacturer Ford is in second place with its F-Class. Despite the fact that the first model of the pick-up series, the F-1, was released in 1948 and the F-150 has been the best-selling car in the US for 32 years(!), Ford has “only” “74 million in service”. The F-Class was produced. It averaged 540,000 parts per year. Third place among the best-selling cars is actually a Volkswagen – but it’s not the Beetle! Third place goes to the Golf, which has been on the market since 1974 and has left the production lines about 35 million times in 48 years – that’s an average of 730,000 Golfs per year.
In fourth place is not the Beetle again, but the Passat, which came to light a year before the Golf. In 49 years Volkswagen produced a total of 30 million examples of the middle class family car. Still the epitome of motorization in the post-war era for many, the VW Beetle ranks sixth with 23 million units produced in 81 years of service. The model’s English name “Beetle” was released in 1938 and continued to be produced in Brazil until 2019 – Beetle production in Germany ended in 1978. The Honda Civic, which has been produced 24 million times since its launch in 1972, oscillates between Passat and Beetle.

Model T is doing well
Seventh place is followed by a surprise shared by three cars: In addition to the already existing Ford Fiesta and Toyota Hilux, there is the Russian all-terrain vehicle Lada Riva, which was discontinued in 2012. All three reached 19 million sales. The top ten best-selling cars were completed by the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa and Ford Escort, with 18 million units sold each.
Meanwhile, the world’s first mass-produced car is still in the standings: the Model T, developed by Ford’s founder Henry Ford (1863-1947) and produced from 1908 to 1927, with a total of 19 years of service delivered to 15 million customers. On average, approximately 790,000 Model Ts are produced each year. In this discipline, Ford only beat the Toyota Corolla.
