Mercedes is currently pursuing two big goals: Swabians want to go from a premium brand to a luxury brand and have electric-only vehicles in their portfolio as soon as possible. For the first goal, the fit with the luxury brand, the new edition of the important E-Class is just right. The new generation of the 4.95-metre-long business limousine has become nice and elegant and is now much more impressive than the smaller C-Class.

It remains essentially a four-door sedan. In addition, there is the station wagon version, which is very important in some European markets, a long-wheelbase variant designed for greater comfort in China, and then the stylish coupe spin-off CLE, which in the fall newly unifies the E-Class Coupé. , C-Class Coupé and CLS in one model.

The fact that the most important markets are no longer in Europe, but in the Far East can be seen from the new E-Class: if you look at the LED eyes of the W214, you will see Asian influences through the light eyeliner. It gets even clearer at the rear, where the LED taillights shine like a red star for the first time. The new luxury model wants to make an impression, and it does.

super instead of hyper

The interior of the new E-Class is also a real show, and for the first time it’s almost S-Class level. The touch- or voice-controlled central super display is hardly any less attractive than the larger but also more confusing hyper display on the S-Class and EQS. In addition, there is a driver-oriented instrument display and, finally, a fully functional separate passenger screen where the co-pilot can browse the web or watch movies. Also new is a front-mounted camera that can be used for selfies or video conferencing. Additionally, four other cameras monitor the interior.

The front and rear seats are comfortable with a sophisticated design and can be equipped with air conditioning and a massage function on request. Thanks to its wheelbase of 2.96 meters, there is also an extremely large area at the rear. The optional air suspension, which can also be combined with insulating materials, double glazing and rear axle steering, also provides the highest level of comfort. Depending on the model, it reduces the turning circle by up to 90 centimeters with a 4.5 degree turning angle at the rear axle. While the luggage volume of the combustion models is suitable with 540 liters, the plug-in versions are more manageable with 370 liters. Ultimately, the annoying edge of waiting is gone.

More than 100 kilometers of electric

Mercedes not only wants to make the future more luxurious, but increasingly electrified. The E-Class lives up to that claim with a variety of plug-in hybrid drives – but the role of the pure premium electric vehicle is left to the EQE. The base engine is a two-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol engine available in two power levels, the E 300e and E 400e. The 312 hp (230 kW) E 300e comes with a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, while the 381 hp (280 kW) Mercedes E 400e 4Matic offers only 4×4.

In both sedans, the electric motor provides the drive with 129 hp (95 kW) and 440 Nm of torque. Consumption is between 0.5 and 0.9 liters per 100 kilometers plus 18.4 and 21.6 kWh. Thanks to the large 25.4 kWh battery, the limousine can travel between 100 and 115 kilometers fully electric and has a top speed of 234 to 250 km/h. Other plug-in hybrid models and high-performance versions from AMG with diesel engines will likely offer at least six cylinders.

Also pure diesel and gasoline engines

However, in many non-electric markets, most customers will likely prefer drives without add-on modules. To begin with, we have the 204 hp (150 kW) Mercedes E 200 and the 197 hp (145 kW) E 220d, which consume between 4.8 and 7.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. A nine-speed automatic transmission is still standard here, and an all-wheel drive variant can also be ordered for the E 220d. Then the top model will be the E 400d, known from the S-Class, offering six cylinders and a displacement of three liters.

from summer 2023

In addition to numerous comforts and new operating functions, the new Mercedes E-Class will be offered with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems, but level 3 autonomous driving will not be possible as in the S-Class and EQS. for now (also interesting: Mercedes’ robot car dream). What is new, on the other hand, is the programming of so-called routines that can be created according to smartphone models. If the temperature drops below five degrees Celsius, for example, seat heating can be activated if desired. In the first step, this only affects the seat functions, but should be expanded to other operating modules in the near future. The market launch of the new E-Class will take place in the summer; prices should start at around 65,000 francs. The station wagon version, the T-model, and the coupe will likely follow towards the end of the year.
