In a sea of red tulips, Polestar unveiled its new SUV coupe at Auto China 2023 in Shanghai.

Something is missing from this SUV. Even his presentation in a sea of red tulips at Auto China in Shanghai was phenomenal. But there is more to talk about his body. “With the Polestar 4 we took a fundamentally new approach to the design of SUV coupés,” says Thomas Ingenlath, 59, CEO of Polestar. You could probably say: Because the Polestar 4 has no rear window. Ingenlath explains that it’s not a technical requirement, but a design highlight.

The Polestar 4 was designed from the ground up as a new type of SUV coupe, rather than simply modifying an existing SUV and giving it a flatter roofline, sacrificing headroom and comfort. “The comfort and experience of rear passengers is clearly given priority,” says Ingenlath. The idea of enclosed space behind the rear passengers is not entirely new. For years, there have been studies that have always used the space as a projection surface or a darkened comfort zone. Or, for weight reasons, you can do without a rear window and rear sight, as on the current Alpine 110 R.

Clear vision thanks to the rearview mirror camera

The terminology in Polestar is now a bit confusing. Because in terms of positioning and price, the new Model 4 should be positioned between Polestar 2 and Polestar 3. The technical basis for the 4.84-metre-long crossover comes from parent company Geely. The electric model offers passengers ample space thanks to its three-meter wheelbase and closed rear wall. The lack of light from behind is compensated for by variable ambient lighting and a rearward-swinging panoramic roof. Camera systems allow the driver to see behind.

The Polestar 4 is powered by two electric motors on the front and rear axles that accelerate it from standstill to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds, with 544 hp (400 kW) and a maximum torque of 686 Newton meters. Alongside the all-wheel drive version, the Polestar 4 will later be offered with rear-wheel drive and 272 hp (200 kW). Thanks to the 102 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery in the lower body, there is a range of 560 or 600 kilometers until the next charging stop. The maximum charging speed is 200 kW. However, for the first time, a Polestar has been designed for bidirectional charging, meaning it can supply electrical energy to other consumers.

The interior features sustainable materials, optional Nappa leather package with headrest speakers, while operation is via Google voice or a 15.4-inch central display. The Polestar 4 will be produced at the Chinese factory in Hangzhou Bay from November. Its European launch is scheduled for early 2024, among others. Prices are not fixed yet.
