When the all-round revamped Cayenne hits dealerships in late July, there will be no downtime altogether. During the extensive makeover aimed at keeping the luxury SUV fresh until the end of the decade, the famous 640 hp Turbo GT top model falls by the wayside – the culprit for which is increasingly stringent exhaust gas regulations in Europe.
But even if the power of the Cayenne dies with us, a lot is going on with the drivers. The S version has been upgraded from six to eight cylinders, while the base model retained its six-cylinder engine and increased its torque to 353 hp (260 kW) and 500 Nm (previously 340 hp/450 Nm). A new monoscroll turbocharger, improved software and higher injection pressure allow the temporary top model of the SUV lineup to now deliver 474 hp (349 kW) and a maximum of 650 Nm – 35 hp (26 kW) on light wheels up to 22 inches. ) and 50 Nm more than before.
More e-power, more range
But without electrification, nothing works at Porsche either. But with the plug-in model called the E-Hybrid, the increase in output is kept within tight limits: 470 hp (346 Nm) and a maximum of 650 Nm means an increase of only 8 hp (6 kW) and even 50 Nm less torque compared to its predecessor. On the other hand, there is a lot going on when it comes to the power distribution of the two propulsion units: the V6 petrol engine 340 hp (250 kW) and the electric motor 136 hp (100 kW) in the current model – 304 hp (224 kW) with the internal combustion engine in the revamped E-Hybrid ) and 177 hp (130 kW) with electric motor. Its purpose is to improve all-electric drivability, efficiency and acceleration.
In parallel, the battery capacity increases from 17.9 to 25.9 kilowatt-hours, giving the part-time electrician a maximum electric range of approximately 90 kilometers. Thanks to the new 11 kW on-board charger, the batteries can be charged in less than 2.5 hours. Electrically gliding is one thing, agility and dynamics are another. To ensure that the Cayenne can do both, Porsche technicians extensively overhauled the air suspension, among other things. An optional lightweight sports package also reduces the coupé variant’s weight by up to 33 kilograms.
digital like the taycan
In order for the Cayenne to remain modern in the interior, the designers have reupholstered the luxury SUV’s interior. A smooth breeze of the electric athlete Taycan now blows through the interior with three screens covering almost the entire width of the cockpit, making the interior look much more modern. The instrument cluster is now curved like an e-sport sedan and measures 12.65 inches, the center touchscreen remains at 12.3 inches and the passenger screen remains at 10.9 inches. As with the Porsche Stromer, a special movie on this monitor ensures that the driver does not see what is happening on this screen.
Things are changing in terms of hardware too: from the end of July, the Cayenne will run all night with Matrix LED lights as standard. If you want better vision, you can order HD matrix LED headlights, available at an additional cost. More than 32,000 pixels per headlight illuminate the road even more precisely. A “predictive” air-conditioning system, fitted as standard, provides fresh air: If the navigation data shows that a tunnel is on the way, the system recirculates air shortly before it enters. Allergy sufferers also benefit from smart ventilation. If a sensor reports a high concentration of fine dust particles in the air, the filter is blown and if necessary an ionizer will purify the air of many germs and pollutants as is known from other luxury SUVs.
Prices remain: the new Porsche Cayenne starts at at least 102,100 francs (coupe from 107,100 francs). For the Cayenne E-Hybrid, Porsche charges CHF 119,300 (Coupé from CHF 123,000) and for the Cayenne S at least CHF 123,400 (Coupé from CHF 129,800).
