Did Genesis hit the gunpowder?

Hyundai’s prime subsidiary Genesis has launched eight models in the past two years – including the Genesis GV60 electric crossover, which was named Swiss Car of the Year 2023 by an independent expert jury.

The launch of Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury subsidiary, which was founded only in 2015, was an impressive fireworks display of innovation. At least eight (!) new models have been launched in Europe (Switzerland, Germany and the UK) since the brand was launched two years ago. It’s not easy even for experts to keep up with such a flood of new products. The Genesis model range in Switzerland now includes three different model series with petrol, diesel or all-electric rear or all-wheel drive and various body variants (see table below).

The invitation to the first international press event at the headquarters in Seoul was even more surprising to us, and we asked ourselves: What new things does the South Korean luxury brand Genesis want to show us again? There’s a lot that could come up: There wasn’t much that was groundbreaking.

Traveling on a flagship

During our stay, we were chauffeurs on the flagship G90, which has been in South Korea for a year. A representative luxury sedan 5.28 meters long with rear or all-wheel drive and a 3.5-liter V6 turbo petrol engine with 380 hp – basically the Korean answer to the German premium sedans Mercedes S-Class, Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series. Unlike the Europeans, the Genesis variant was only available with pure combustion engine propulsion until now.

But the G90 Long-Wheel variant, launched in Korea two months ago, is almost 20 centimeters taller (5.47 m) and even more luxurious (including the right-rear massage reclining seat), not only with all-wheel drive, but also with 415 hp. half hybrid drive. Former Bentley and current Genesis marketing boss Graeme Russell doesn’t want to tell us if the flagship G90 will be coming to Europe.

From 2024 the GV80 is also available as an SUV coupé

When we visit the Genesis Design Center, Sang Yup Lee, head of the Global Design Center, greets us. But it can’t show us much that is new either. In addition to the modestly refreshed G80 sedan (with sportier radiator grille and rims), Lee also introduces a “close-to-series” coupé variant of the GV80 SUV. It’s celebrating its world premiere in New York (USA) these days and should arrive at us in January 2024. In addition, we get two already known works, the Genesis X and X Speedium Coupé. However, Lee and Russell are reluctant to give any further details on the chances of mass production of these two breathtaking concept cars.

And for that reason, we can’t quite shake off the impression that Genesis has dusted itself off with last year’s fireworks of innovations. Because, in addition to the gently revised brand logo and a presentation of the distinctive two-stripe brand design philosophy, we are shown an inductive charging station that will only be installed at 23 Genesis showrooms in Korea over the next 18 months, and a (slow) 11 kilowatt-hour wireless charging station. allowed.

The robot handles the loading

Celebrating its world premiere at the Seoul Mobility Show that ended today, Genesis parent company Hyundai’s ACR (Automatic Charging Robot) charging robot seems to us a much more innovative innovation. Thanks to artificial intelligence, ACR communicates with the electric vehicle, independently opens the charging door and connects it to the charging station. According to Hyundai, this is no longer pure science fiction, but reality in the near future. In other words, we will soon leave not only the steering wheel but also the charging of the vehicle to artificial intelligence.
