Italian auto refinery Giannini Automobili wants to become a car manufacturer with the electric pickup truck Giannini Uso EV.

Italians love small cars. Preferably the ones that still make you look fat. The Italian company Giannini Automobili, headquartered in Rome, made a name for itself with the refinements of the Fiat 500 and Fiat Panda. Now the southern European tuner wants to become a car manufacturer.

Giannini Automobili embarks on a car-making adventure with the Giannini Uso EV, an electric-driven mini pickup truck that looks like a panda. At just 3.17 meters long, the little car is almost larger than many microcars, but still over half a meter longer than a first-generation Smart. Microcars are tax efficient in Italian cities and safety equipment has been reduced. The Uso is also forward-looking with an electric drive.

Due to its size, the pick-up should also find its fans in turbulent city traffic. The manageable width of 1.62 meters also helps here. In addition, the impact protection strips provide a rustic appearance and protect the body against impacts when parked, even on narrow streets. This predetermines the Uso for use even in the narrowest streets of Florence.

There is room for two people inside. Luggage, purchases or bulky items can be easily accommodated in the 1.10 x 0.75 meter open loading area. Cargo is best protected and secured with brackets and nets. The carrying capacity of the mini pickup truck is 250 kilograms. As a light vehicle, it falls within the scope of the EU registration class L7e-CU. Registration requirements for such models are much lower than for a regular passenger car. You will search in vain for safety and assistance technologies such as airbags or brake assist. This classification means that the Giannini Uso can be driven by 16 year olds with the appropriate driver’s license.

Whether the pick-up is truly suitable for off-road use can be questioned in terms of a manageable 20 hp (15 kW) output with a maximum torque of 120 Newton meters. Even if the Giannini Uso is equipped with studded tires on demand and provides 41 hp (30 kW) to the rear axle for a short time. Because despite the off-road appearance, there is no all-wheel drive. The battery with 21 kilowatt hours (kWh) provides a range of up to 235 kilometers in the city. But with studded tyres, the situation is completely different: the rumble 165 tires reduce the distance per charge to 140 kilometers.

Despite the LED spots on the roof and the off-road exterior mirrors, the small electric pick-up can hit the road at 90 kilometers per hour. The battery pack in the lower body can be recharged in approximately three hours with a charging capacity of 6.6 kW. However, the price of the small city all-terrain vehicle is quite high, with the equivalent of almost 28,160 francs plus VAT.
