According to market researchers, foldable smartphones will remain a niche business for years to come. The analysis company IDC predicted on Wednesday that no less than 48 million such devices will be sold in 2027.
That would be a big jump from the 14 million last year. However, the folding devices would then only have a share of 3.5 percent in the total smartphone market.
Samsung is the market leader
Despite the relatively high prices, the foldable mobile phone segment is currently growing in an overall shrinking smartphone market. IDC market researchers predict that sales will increase more than 50 percent this year to 21.4 million devices. In 2022, the folding segment had even grown by 75 percent, while a total of eleven percent fewer smartphones were sold.
In Western Europe and North America, market leader Samsung is particularly strong in the industry with its two models, which either fold out to the size of a small tablet or a full-fledged smartphone.
Several Chinese suppliers also offer foldable smartphones, but mainly on the domestic market.
Apple remains out of the market.
