The Volkswagen Group presented a luxurious but affordable electric small car on Wednesday. The experts’ reactions to the «ID. 2all” show that VW could be perfect. But on closer inspection, the presentation turns out to be a marketing stunt.
What has VW presented?
A new small electric car called “ID. 2all”, the price-performance ratio of which is said to deter the biggest competitors in Europe, the US and Asia. Find out everything you need to know in the following photo gallery.
Why is that important?
A German electric car influencer and YouTuber sums it up:
The production version of the ID. According to the group management, 2all is only one of ten new electric cars that VW wants to market by 2026. In addition, the Germans are also working on a model for less than 20,000 euros.
The German news magazine Der Spiegel notes:
Why “Tesla Killer”?
The local e-car market is firmly in the hands of Volkswagen and Tesla. Although the Americans lead the list of best-selling models with the Model 3 and the Model Y, the VW Group sells more electric cars in Europe. Now imagine that the Germans launch a cheap model that offers both luxury and range.
What’s the catch?
The management team of the VW Group follows the announcement of world champion Elon Musk: A new electric car is presented that many people want, but which will not be on the market for at least two years. 🙈
Why is VW doing this?
A motoring journalist at “Zeit” notes:
With the announcement of the ID.2all, the largest German car group is changing course – towards more affordable electric cars in large numbers.
Paradoxically, the corona pandemic, supply bottlenecks and the war in Ukraine have led to high profits for almost all car manufacturers. But because there were not enough microchips, basic variants with little equipment and small engines were removed from the program. VW wants to change this in the coming years.
How do you pronounce «ID. 2all” out?
In English, “ID to all”, although that’s more Danish.
At least that’s what VW brand boss Thomas Schäfer said at the presentation. What is meant is probably not “for everyone”, but “for everyone”, but somehow the marketing professionals have made the chaos too perfect: German-language reports also say that “idea for everyone” is meant.
Let’s agree on: “New small electric car from VW, which unfortunately will not be available for a long time”.
How big is the little one?
At 4.05 meters the ID. 2 all as long as a VW Polo (with combustion engine), states heise.de. There are already European electric cars on the market in the same class, such as the Renault Zoe, Opel Corsa-e and Peugeot e-208. These are among the 25 best-selling e-cars in Europe.
Unlike other Volkswagen vehicles, the ID.2all has no rear but front wheel drive. This allows for a large trunk volume: Volkswagen specifies 490 litres, significantly more than the 381 liters of the longer Golf 8.
Heise.de also predicts:
Why so cheap?
In any case, VW is not counting on a (cheaper) miracle battery, as has been increasingly pursued by the media lately.
Spiegel.de explains:
And now you!
