Fortunately, accidents between bikes and trucks are relatively rare, but often end tragically. This is due to the size and weight of these vehicles. The blind spot mentioned in the question includes areas around trucks and buses that the driver cannot see directly or through mirrors. There are several similar blind spots around the vehicle.
For this reason, it is extremely important that cyclists do not enter these dangerous areas. It’s best to stand in the back of the truck before crossing the road, especially when it’s moving. When the truck flashes to the right: Always wait until it has turned completely. For example, if you can approach a truck stopping in a bike lane, you should be at least two meters in front of the driver where you are in sight of the driver, not next to the truck.
Whenever possible, make eye contact with the driver. The following applies: If you can’t see the driver from the bike in the vehicle’s exterior mirror, you won’t be able to see yourself either. When in doubt, it is better to give up your own right of way once more than to put yourself in a dangerous situation.

Like most new cars, more and more trucks are equipped with sensors that recognize people and cyclists near the vehicle and warn the driver of danger. Such assist systems will be mandatory on new trucks from 2024. However, it will take many years for all vehicles to have these systems.
