People were quite surprised when an advertisement of the Brabus G 800 Widestar for a ridiculous price appeared at Dutch luxury dealer 3B Exclusief in Rotterdam. And indeed, the Mercedes tuner’s G-Class was sold for only around 78,000 francs in no time.
But when you look at it from the side at the latest, it is immediately clear: there is a problem here. Is there a Suzuki Jimny hiding under the expanding trunk? A look under the hood completely clears the confusion: instead of the 800PS four-liter V8, there’s just a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with 102 HP. So yes – there really is a Suzuki Jimny under the elaborate wide body panel.
deceptive real fake
The short 3.6m Japanese all-terrain vehicle, the Suzuki Jimny, has been rebuilt in detail to look like a Mercedes original. The deception begins with the front end, which looks impressively real with the characteristic bumper, typical headlight bezels and attached turn signals. In addition to the AMG radiator grille and AMG wheels, the spoiler, bonnet insert, additional lights, exterior mirrors and even door handles make it look like a real G-Class.
Indoors, Suzuki will definitely unmask then – misconception. Because that’s where the explosion comes in: The interior is definitely not made of a plastic landscape. It remains faithful to the original with leather and checkered quilting on the seats, door panels and gear console. The elegant Brabus B logo is embroidered on the seats and thick sports steering wheel. Even the starry sky of the original Brabus was established. But the Suzuki controls remained. True to its motto: “A brother from another mother.”
Who does this?
Elaborate copies and counterfeit fabrications are often known only from handbags or watches offered by shady sellers at discounted prices. Brabus-Suzuki doesn’t look like a hobby mechanic’s cobblestone co-working. Details are too meticulous. So the question arises, who built such a wide-bodied Suzuki at this level of detail? It was certainly not Brabus himself.
We keep coming across such G-Class Suzukis while researching. The trail leads to Dubai (UAE). Some dealers advertise rough looking Jimnys with zero mileage for the equivalent of 41,600 francs. So we’re right over the Persian Gulf. It turns out that the creator of this fake Brabus is a company called Fast Car Service Center (FCSC).
FCSC openly promotes the conversion of a Suzuki Jimny into a wild-looking G-Class on social media. Complete vehicle interior or body parts for self-installation. They offer a simple body kit of around 7500 francs to look like the Mercedes G-class. Prices for thicker wide body kits range from 9,100 to 20,600 francs. Now it’s clear: This certainly doesn’t come from Brabus.
not fun
Reproducing a complete luxury car was primarily the responsibility of Chinese companies. And for the Suzuki Jimny there have long been complete kits for conversion on the Chinese Internet exchanges. Not just for a G-Class look, but also for a Land Rover Defender look.
Meticulously and with the utmost precision, recreating the Japanese SUV from the Mercedes Brabus G 800 Widestar look takes quality to the next level. And how does the tuner from Bottrop (D) react? When asked by the German trade magazine Auto Motor Sport, a Brabus spokesperson said “you’re not having fun with this” – and that was the politest quote in the conversation.
