This diesel won’t last much longer

A new model every year with the latest electrical engineering from the parent company: With this strategy, Alfa Romeo wants to expand its product portfolio in the future, and it started last year with the first plug-in hybrid Alfa Romeo Tonale. This was the start of the brand’s electric future: The brand’s first electric vehicle will be launched next year, and by 2027 only electric-driven models will be available in the range. But the daughter of Italian Stellantis does not want to say goodbye to internal combustion engines. As before, Alfa Romeo focuses on the balance between driving pleasure, economy and comfort when updating the Stelvio. With no electrification of the drives, the diesel version in particular meets these three requirements – and can be used for another production cycle, despite falling diesel sales in the Swiss market.

still only four cylinders

Unlike competitors like the Audi Q5 or BMW X3, which have six-cylinder diesels, Alfa Romeo sticks to the cheaper four-cylinder with all its drawbacks. Unfortunately, the 2.2-litre, 210 hp (154 kW) Alfa diesel engine lacks a certain amount of torque at high speeds, especially on rural roads or highways. And the Alfa turbodiesel doesn’t start quietly either: the cylinder quartet is always acoustically present, regardless of whether the engine is cold or hot. Alfa Romeo states the consumption as 6.1 liters. OK, for a 1.8-tonne all-wheel drive vehicle that looks a little more dynamic on the road thanks to more efficient weight distribution.

The Alpha turbodiesel engine is coupled with ZF’s quality eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive with preferential power at the rear axle only engages the front wheels when driving dynamics or surface demands. Maximum torque of 470 Newton meters provides acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds and a top speed of 215 km/h.

No price increase

What Stelvio has never really been able to convince is its screens and controls. Thanks to the makeover, these outdated instruments are now being replaced by modern, animated digital clocks and a larger screen. Alpha takes a big step forward with this, but still doesn’t quite reach the level of some of its rivals. But finally there is modern and adaptive LED headlight technology for the mid-range crossover. And the old strength of the 4.69-metre-long Stelvio – the chassis with adaptive shock absorbers – is inherited unchanged. Probably if you want to buy the latest Stelvio diesel, you need to spend at least 76,900 francs – it is available in three trim levels – Ti, Veloce and Competizione.
