Engadiners drive all-wheel drive vehicles, Zurich people drive large SUVs, and there are many small cars in the narrow canton of Ticino: we each have our own prejudices about who drives which car in which canton. Sometimes they can be true. But only a real analysis provides the truth. Insurer Axa calculated based on the vehicles it insured: Where are the most expensive cars on average in Switzerland and in which canton are the cheapest cars?
Data on the respective cantonal ranking was collected in 2022 and takes into account all cars insured with AXA. And one canton topped it by a clear margin: nowhere else in Switzerland is the average car price higher than in the canton of Zug. On average, each Zug resident drives a car worth CHF 63,000. This is more than 30 percent higher than the Swiss average of around 47,000 francs. The Zuger’s preference for expensive and modern cars is probably due to their relatively high level of wealth. On the other hand, the proportion of company vehicles in Zug companies is higher than in other cantons.
cheapest cars
At the bottom of the table are the western Swiss cantons of Neuchâtel, Jura and Friborg, which on average have relatively the cheapest cars. Neuchâtel at the bottom is 20,000 francs less than the value in the canton of Zug. But Ticino is also in the small price segment. Compared to other cantons, the canton of Ticino has the most vehicles with a vehicle value under CHF 11,000.
The canton of Schwyz ranks second with an average value of around 57,000 francs, closely followed by Appenzell Innerrhoden. The cantons of Graubünden, Basel-Stadt, Zurich, Nidwalden, Basel-Landschaft, Valais, Aargau and Obwalden are also above average.

most expensive car
The ranking shows the average prices of insured cars, but the range is wide in all cantons. “The range of insured cars ranges from models worth 10,000 francs to luxury cars worth several million francs,” explains Jérôme Pahud, head of mobility insurance at AXA.
It seems that expensive sports cars are valued in Vaud, because in a Swiss comparison the most expensive cars are insured there. Even the most expensive car insured with AXA worth around CHF 5.5 million is redeemed here.
These cantons rely on the tried and tested
Canton Zug is at the top when it comes to vehicle age. The cars there are on average 8.9 years old. For comparison, the oldest cars drive around with license plates Schaffhausen, Bern and Thurgau: their average age is 10.7. The Swiss average is 9.9 years.
The 9.1-year-old people of Freiburg also seem to value newer vehicles. Just like Ticino with an average vehicle age of 9.2. Zug people change their cars almost two years before owners in many other cantons. The oldest vehicles covered by AXA classic car insurance are over a hundred years old.
