New baby Tesla for $25,000

Years ago, Tesla’s boss Elon Musk (51) announced that he was planning an entry-level model below the Model 3. But since then, “Baby Tesla” as experts often refer to it has always had to take a back seat to other projects like the Cybertruck pickup truck and the Semi truck. Musk announced on Tesla Investors Day that these are now fully developed. Now we can focus on the next generation of electric cars. And above all, there must be one thing: cheap.

The new vehicle base should only cost half of the next largest platform currently based on the Model 3 sedan and compact SUV Model Y. In particular, Musk talks about the “$25,000 car”, which is almost half the price of the currently cheapest Model 3. Elon Musk’s plan: to use a budget model to attract customers who previously did not have the opportunity or do not want to buy an electric car. In the long run, Musk’s goal is to eventually sell 10 million vehicles a year, making Tesla the world’s largest automaker from today’s perspective.

Model Q instead of Model 2

To achieve this ambitious goal, Musk confirmed on Investors Day that the baby Tesla will be built in a new gigafactory in Monterrey (Mexico), not far from the US border with Texas. All other information about the car remains speculation – for example, the name: Musk has in the past denied that it should be called the Model 2, and therefore points to the location below the Model 3. Tesla’s smallest “Model Q” will be christened, according to recent rumors from China, where the baby Tesla will be designed, developed and manufactured at Gigafactory Shanghai for the Chinese market, according to insider information.

Three versions (Long Range, Performance, Basic RWD) will be offered, the vehicle is expected to travel up to 400 kilometers on one battery charge and complete 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 mph, depending on the model. 6.9 seconds. Elon Musk once said about the design of the smallest Tesla, that the model should be visually “something radical like the Cybertruck that the world has never seen before and that goes straight to the heart.”

Sunday launch won’t happen before 2024

Tesla posted a photo of a never-before-seen Tesla on the Wechat network, popular in China, as part of a job posting a year ago. It is unclear to what extent the animation represents a truly concrete design idea. What is certain is that the compact model with the hatchback should be somewhere between the Honda e and the VW ID.3 in size, ie no longer than 4.30 meters. Its release can only be speculated – 2023, as discussed at the beginning, does not seem extremely realistic.
