We make these 7 mistakes on the highway

1. Driving too slow

Anyone paralyzed for no reason until trucks pass by on the highway is at least brutal in heavy traffic: such a thing is poison to the flow of traffic. Please swim with us! Even in a traffic jam: If you leave a very large gap in front of you, the traffic jam at the end will be exactly as long as that gap. And in the speeding lane, please really reach highway speed.

2. Riding too fast

If you drive faster than allowed, you endanger others depending on the speed, but in any case you hurt yourself: do you risk getting a fine for saving a minute? Driving fast in heavy traffic, jostling and constantly changing lanes also lead to premature braking, congestion and even triggering accidents. But: Those who are faster can pass and not be blocked – and those who want to pass (if there is enough distance) can announce this by flashing their headlights.

3. Do not create a recovery strip

While this has worked for example recently in Germany thanks to high fines (starting at €200), the bailout lane (more on this here) is still mostly ignored in Switzerland – but mandatory since 2021 (fines 100 per cent). franc). As a reminder: the street is not created only when the blue light is on. But as soon as it stops or stops. So left to edge, middle and right to right (leave the stiff shoulder). Please do not look at the accident scene or even film.

4. Keeping too little distance

Anyone who adheres to the half-speed or two-second rule will be penalized by intervening. They often forget: the flasher does not create a space right (more on that here). Two seconds is ideal, less than 1.8 seconds is fine, one second is risky anyway and less than 0.6 seconds is really expensive. Speaking of changing lanes: you must signal before you change lanes, not just when you change lanes (more on this here). Also on the way back – and here too: keep your distance. Just on the right when you see the front of the overtaking vehicle in the rear view mirror.

5. Starving others

If traffic permits, and you see others bumping into the slower ones, you should also give them the opportunity to get out (rather than “shutting down”). This also applies to trucks! If they don’t need to brake first and then accelerate again, they’ll finish faster – which helps everyone. Tip: Move slightly to the right so that the front you can tow is clearer (if you have a truck, you can turn on your headlights). However: There is no right to the void or the elephant race.

6. Block the zipper

Although the zipper has been mandatory since January 1, 2021, people still wear the zipper too early, which disrupts the flow of traffic or people getting in are blocked. As a reminder: In heavy traffic, only cut left-right-left at the bottleneck. If you block it, you pay 100 francs. If you push though, more. You can find all the details on the subject here.

7. Ignore the right-hand drive requirement

Sometimes you can just watch an auto-prop pickup behind a mid lane blocker. It’s spreading – and suddenly it’s there, suddenly a traffic jam. No, just because you have to go to the center after seven kilometers doesn’t mean you can’t get there now. If cars are constantly passing you on the right (more on driving here), please ask yourself why you are in the middle lane or left lane.
