Google wants to cut jobs worldwide. However, it is still unclear how many Zooglers, as the Zurich employees are called, are affected. Two SVP cantonal councilors are now asking Zurich’s governing council to find out.
Google plans to cut around 12,000 jobs worldwide. Because information about the Zurich location has not yet been made public, the SVP politicians Patrick Walder (Dübendorf) and Lorenz Habicher (Zurich) now want to know in an investigation whether the cantonal government is aware. If not, she should talk to “this important employer”.
5,000 Google employees in Zurich
Zurich’s governing council should also indicate whether it expects social security consequences if large jobs are cut. The cantonal councilors are also concerned about the possible decrease in tax revenues.
In addition, the SVP politicians want to know if the governing council is aware of further major workplace layoffs in Zurich in the near future.
About 5,000 Google employees work in Zurich. Internally they are called Zoogler, a combination of Zurich and Google. Google opened its first location in 2007 on the Hürlimann site.
