Can you park to the left?

Usually you do this because there are other cars already parked there – then you will probably be allowed to stop or park on the left. But the uncertainty remains: Are you really allowed to park in the opposite direction of travel? And under what conditions? In fact, there are four exceptions to the “correct parking rule” in Switzerland.

It is generally forbidden because it would be dangerous to drive away: then you will be “blind” to the front among other parked cars. And of course, stopping or parking on the left is always illegal if you have to cross a straight line to do so, if it is forbidden to stop or park on the left, or if there are parking spaces on the right but not passing. left.

exceptions to the rule

You can stop and park on the left side of the road in four situations:

  • There is no parking or stopping prohibition on the right, but if there is no on the left, you can stop on the left.

  • On a one-way street, you can legally stop and park on either side in the direction of travel.

  • If the tram lines are on the right side of the street, you can park on the left instead of on the right.

  • You are allowed to stand on the left in narrow streets with little traffic. So no traffic and almost no danger when switching sides, most likely neighborhood streets. But what does “narrow” mean? The meaning of this exception must be taken into account: traffic must not be blocked. Unlike cars parked on the left, if you are standing alone on the right and it will be narrow in this case, you should also park on the left. This is the case, for example, if two cars cannot pass each other with difficulty because our car is parked on the right, or if a single car can barely pass through an even narrower street.

You will be fined (here the big parking guide) for parking on the wrong side as the case may be. It can cost 40 francs or much more – for example, if you are disabled. If in doubt, go back first – because “Others do too!” Unfortunately, protection from punishment is as little as ignorance.
