2022 was an eventful year: the Queen died, war broke out in Europe, Roger Federer resigned, and, and, and… These and other topics not only dominated the media, Google also recorded them. Like every year, the Google Trends website ranked the most common search terms and published the major hit list – sorted by the country in which they were created. This is what the year 2022 looked like on the Swiss World Wide Web:

General search terms

The dominant subject was the war in Ukraine. But there was also a lot of googling for sporting events, such as the World Cup in Qatar, the Australian Open in tennis or the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in February.

headlines and excitement

Alongside the war in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyj, one of the biggest (albeit innocuous in direct comparison) excitement happened at the start of the year: Novak Djokovic’s entry into Australia – even though he wasn’t actually allowed to play at the tennis tournament over there.

But users also worried about the unrest surrounding the ailing major bank Credit Suisse, the outbreak of the monkeypox virus and the magnitude 4.7 earthquake in Switzerland in mid-September.

Personalities from Switzerland

In 2022, the list of wanted Swiss personalities is likely to be as diverse – and female – as it has rarely been before. It is led by Roger Federer, who stepped down after the Laver Cup in September. Federer is followed by the new wrestling king Joel Wicki, the journalist Luzia Tschirky and Simonetta Sommaruga, who has resigned her position as a federal councilor because of the stroke of her husband (Lukas Hartmann, in 9th place).

The why questions present a whole range of things that the Swiss, who have a wide range of interests, would like to have explained: from the color of the sky (in spring it was yellow because of the Sahara dust) to religion and politics to sports, everything is included.
