2022 was an eventful year: the Queen died, war broke out in Europe, Roger Federer resigned, and, and, and… These and other topics not only dominated the media, Google also recorded them. Like every year, the Google Trends website ranked the most common search terms and published the major hit list – sorted by the country in which they were created. This is what the year 2022 looked like on the Swiss World Wide Web:
General search terms
The dominant subject was the war in Ukraine. But there was also a lot of googling for sporting events, such as the World Cup in Qatar, the Australian Open in tennis or the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing in February.
This list tells you that what topics we searched the most on Google in 2021:

headlines and excitement
Alongside the war in Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyj, one of the biggest (albeit innocuous in direct comparison) excitement happened at the start of the year: Novak Djokovic’s entry into Australia – even though he wasn’t actually allowed to play at the tennis tournament over there.
But users also worried about the unrest surrounding the ailing major bank Credit Suisse, the outbreak of the monkeypox virus and the magnitude 4.7 earthquake in Switzerland in mid-September.

Personalities from Switzerland
In 2022, the list of wanted Swiss personalities is likely to be as diverse – and female – as it has rarely been before. It is led by Roger Federer, who stepped down after the Laver Cup in September. Federer is followed by the new wrestling king Joel Wicki, the journalist Luzia Tschirky and Simonetta Sommaruga, who has resigned her position as a federal councilor because of the stroke of her husband (Lukas Hartmann, in 9th place).

International personalities
This list includes personalities from tennis, entertainment, and politics. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are both among the most wanted personalities “thanks” to their spectacular lawsuits in April and May. We’ll also remember Will Smith’s slap in the face to Chris Rock at the Oscars earlier this year.

- Rafael Nadal
- Simon Leviev
- Anna Delvey

series
The streaming platform Netflix is leading the way: the series about the American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was both disturbing and fascinating in 2022. But also “Stranger Things”, “Inventing Anna” or “The Watcher” come from Netflix.

how-questions
While the how questions in last year’s Google annual review were mainly about the subject of Corona, this year it looks a lot more colorful. The exact age of old lords seems to have people interested – as well as the maximum age dwarves can reach. And no, there is no separate term for influencers who are on average older than their followers – a creative new word may be coming soon.
- How long is omicron contagious?
- How many hydroelectric power stations are there in Switzerland?
- How old is Putin?
- What do you call older influencers?
- How long is the equator?
- How long do dwarves live?
- At what level do you have a fever?
- How many countries are there on Earth?
- How old is Prince Charles?
- How many types of cheese are there in Switzerland?
Ask something
The top 10 questions reflect one of the most important topics of the year: the Russian offensive war against Ukraine. What to do if you test positive for the coronavirus is also a very valid question – after two years of the pandemic and countless press conferences, the fact that you hardly have to do anything feels a little wrong.
- What is an Oligarch?
- What is NATO?
- What is 2G Plus?
- What to do with a wasp sting?
- What are Sanctions?
- What is Aphasia?
- What’s new in iOS 16?
- What to do if you are Corona positive?
- What does Putin want?
- What is ADHD?
Why ask
The why questions present a whole range of things that the Swiss, who have a wide range of interests, would like to have explained: from the color of the sky (in spring it was yellow because of the Sahara dust) to religion and politics to sports, everything is included.
- Why is Russia attacking Ukraine?
- Why is the sky yellow today?
- Why are gasoline prices rising?
- Why is it called Albanifest?
- Why is the sky blue?
- Why do Muslims fast?
- Why isn’t summer playing today?
goodbye
Many well-known personalities have also left us in 2022. By far the most famous of them: Queen Elizabeth II. Her death caused a veritable firework of journalistic coverage: there were live tickers during her funeral, historical reviews and also critical commentary on English colonialism.
- Queen Elizabeth II
- Anne Heche
- Gaspar Uliel
- Aaron Carter
- Olivia Newton-John
- Ivan Trump
- Jean Pierre Pernaut
- Endo anaconda
- Ray Liotta
