In a video call, Breton Musk said there is “a lot of work” to bring Twitter into line with EU law. Among other things, the online service must “significantly” strengthen content moderation and fight disinformation “resolutely”, Breton said in a statement following the conversation.
Breton acknowledged Musk’s intention to get Twitter “ready for the DSA,” the EU’s digital services law.
Passed by the EU Parliament last year, the DSA aims to tighten regulation of the EU’s very large online businesses. It will take effect next year after the tech giants have had enough time to comply with the stricter regulations.
Musk did not immediately respond to Breton’s statement. However, in a reply to another Twitter user, the multibillionaire promised that “Twitter 2.0 would be much more effective, transparent and fair”.
Musk, a self-proclaimed advocate for free speech, has fired many Twitter employees charged with moderating content and communicating with Brussels since taking over the online service. He has also begun unblocking Twitter users who have been banned for spreading disinformation, including former US President Donald Trump. (sda/afp)
