About a third do not want to buy an electric car because of the lack of electricity and the high electricity costs

According to a study by TCS, the impending energy shortage has an impact on the willingness to buy electric cars. It is mainly younger people up to the age of 39 who still want to buy an electric car.

About half of the respondents do not intend to purchase an electric car, according to a statement from TCS on Monday about the representative study of electromobility. Despite the current situation, a quarter is sticking to its purchase intention.

Of the younger generation of people up to the age of 39, 70 percent have an electric car or are planning to buy an electric car. This population group would like politicians to create more financial incentives for the purchase of an electric car. This included co-financing of charging stations, for which about two-thirds are in favour.

The older generations (over 65s), on the other hand, are generally more critical of electric mobility: about 50 percent own or plan to buy an electric car. The survey also shows that the willingness to buy is currently not increasing, but is roughly at the same level as last year.

By far the most important reason to buy an electric car is still the climate. However, according to the announcement, two new arguments have been included in the current TCS E-Barometer: the increasing range of electric vehicles and rising oil prices.

Several arguments against buying

Arguments against a purchase were the high purchase costs (40 percent), the short range (35 percent) and the lack of charging stations, which were criticized by 33 percent. About a third do not want to buy an electric car because of the imminent lack of electricity and the high electricity costs. Compared to previous years, the electric car has thus “lost part of its supremacy as the means of transport of the future”. Significantly fewer want to use a plug-in hybrid model.

The 4th E-Barometer (PDF) was carried out in cooperation with the research institute gfs.bern. Across Switzerland, 1,000 people aged 18 and over were surveyed online between September 23 and October 9. (sda)
