Since April 1, 2024, fast bikes that reach speeds of up to 45 km/h must be equipped with a speedometer. Do I need to replace my old electric bike anymore?
T. Razzani, Bristen UR
No, fast electric bikes with support for up to 45 km/h released before April 1 do not need to be equipped with a speedometer – not yet. The law provides for a three-year period until April 1, 2027. However, from then on, all e-bikes with yellow numbers will be required to have a speedometer. For now, only those buying a new, fast e-bike need to make sure it has a speedometer. Slow pedal-assisted electric bicycles and electric scooters at speeds up to 25 km/h are completely exempt from the new obligation.
No unlimited power for speed enthusiasts
But be careful: Even without a speedometer, the general and signaled maximum speeds apply to all electric bikes, including “slow” ones, since April 1, 2022. For example, if you are caught in a 30 km/h zone or a higher speed zone, you will face a 30 franc fine.
Speed limits do not apply to bicycles without an auxiliary engine. However, people who largely ignore these can still be reported for endangering or obstructing others. Such a fine would then be significantly more expensive than 30 francs.
