The Geneva Motor Show is back! After four canceled editions in recent years, the Geneva International Motor Show GIMS will take place at the Geneva exhibition center Palexpo from 27 February to 3 March. The exhibition last took place in 2019; In 2020, it was canceled shortly before the start due to the emerging corona epidemic and the ban on large events.
Since then the trade show scene has been in turmoil – not only in Geneva, but also trade shows in Detroit (USA), Paris (F) and Munich (D, International Motor Show IAA) with most exhibitors turning their backs on their own events and digitalizing their innovations. They preferred to focus on their presentations. A new concept is intended to revitalize GIMS. “This year we want to use a new approach to bring back brands that are not there yet,” says Alexandre de Senarclens (48), President of the sponsoring foundation of the Geneva Motor Show.
Approximately 30 participants, new concept
When it comes to the concept, he and salon manager Sandro Mesquita, 49, rely on a mix of innovation and charm. Under the slogan “Auto.Future.Now”, various theme zones will present new developments in electric motorsport, design, individual mobility and networking, as well as sim racing.
Renault Group will present innovations one after another at its largest stand. The production version of the new, all-electric Renault R5 is eagerly awaited. The retro design of the compact electric car is said to be close to the concept car introduced three years ago. At the same time, the electric Scenic E-Tech Electric and the new brand flagship Rafale are now being launched in Switzerland. The SUV coupe comes with a 200-hp hybrid drive; Later, a 300 hp all-wheel drive vehicle will arrive as a plug-in hybrid. Romanian Renault subsidiary Dacia is showing audiences the third generation of the Duster and the revamped budget Stromer Spring for the first time.
Two Chinese brands start with us
In addition, two of the automobile giants from China, which are currently taking off in Europe, will take up a lot of space in Geneva. BYD and MG are preparing for launch in Geneva, Switzerland. Also present will be Isuzu, a small Japanese commercial vehicle manufacturer, and a number of niche providers: Microlino from Küsnacht ZH, as well as Italian supercar manufacturer Pininfarina and custom motorcycles from French motorcycle inventor Ludovic Lazareth will also be represented, among others.
And then Californian luxury car manufacturer Lucid will introduce itself for the first time in Geneva. The company, led by Tesla’s former technology boss Peter Rawlinson, will bring the brand new Gravity SUV and new Sapphire and Pure versions of the Air sedan.
Experience instead of just looking
First of all, the fair is now about participation and experience. In workshops with designer legend Frank Stephenson, audiences will be able to draw the cars on display outside the fair or drive some of the electric models. A VIP day, which is a congress event with lectures and panel discussions, is also planned on February 27.
Among others, Renault CEO Luca de Meo (56) and president of the world motorsport association FIA Natalie Robyn (48) will discuss new developments in e-mobility and motorsport. And Star designer and former BMW design boss Chris Bangle (67) offers his views on the evolution of car design. Mesquita is confident in its visitor numbers. Approximately 1,000 media representatives are currently accredited; Approximately 200,000 visitors would be a success for him.
A touch of the Geneva Motor Show of the past, when the trade fair was still one of the most important in the world, will still be felt in the halls: 100 years ago, the trade fair was held internationally for the first time. That is why the Salon Foundation presents around 40 models that once celebrated their world premiere in Geneva. In some cases, even the specific car introduced at the time.
