People in France can now show a digital driver’s license during traffic checks. The Ministry of the Interior in Paris announced on Wednesday that the document will be integrated into a special app for official documents.
Anyone who has the new version of the French identity card in credit card format can take advantage of the offer. According to the newspaper ‘Le Parisien’, the digital driving license had already been tested in three French departments. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin emphasized in the newspaper that it should only be a supplement to the physical driver’s license and not a replacement. It should soon also be possible to present vehicle documents via the app.
The digital driver’s license is integrated into the government’s ‘France Identité’ smartphone app, which is available for iOS (iPhone) and Android. During police checks, it is sufficient to hold your own mobile phone directly next to the mobile phone of the checking police officer. A contactless connection (NFC) is then established between the two mobile devices.
