BMW’s 5 Series sedan has been available with combustion engines or as the all-electric i5 since 2023. The Bavarians are now introducing the station wagon of the new 5 Series with the Touring suffix. Several electric station wagons are already on the market, such as the Opel Astra Electric and Peugeot E-308 SW. However, customers looking for an electric station wagon in the premium league have not yet found what they are looking for. This now changes with the new BMW i5 Touring station wagon.

But like the sedan, the station wagon will not only be available electric, but will also be available initially with diesel drive and later as a plug-in hybrid with a gasoline engine and four or six cylinders. Compared to the previous model, the new Touring grows by almost ten centimeters to 5.06 meters and is therefore exactly the same length as the sedan.

There are no surprises in the design. The station wagon is identical to the sedan, right down to the B-pillar. Even the Touring’s wheelbase is only two centimeters longer. However, the new 5 Series Touring has significantly more space inside than the previous model; Loading volume remains the same, between 570 and 1700 litres, especially for rear passengers. In addition to the power tailgate, there is now a remote control for the rear seat backrests; This allows the luggage compartment partition net and the luggage compartment cover to disappear elegantly under the boot floor. Practical: Trailers weighing up to two tonnes can be connected using the optional trailer hitch.

Initially electric and diesel

The drives of the station wagon are the same as those of the sedan. The BMW i5 eDrive40 Touring with 313 hp (230 kW), 400 Nm and rear-wheel drive will be available at the start of sales. Its standard consumption of 16.5 kWh/100 km provides a maximum range of 578 kilometers. When the new M5 celebrates its premiere as a sporty station wagon next summer, the i5 M60 xDrive with an impressive 601 hp (442 kW), 820 Nm and a top speed of 230 km/h (0-100 km/h) will appear. 3.9 s) top model with all-wheel drive. The maximum charging speed is 205 kW, the standard range is a maximum of 506 kilometers. Both i5 models use an 81.2 kWh (net) lithium-ion battery and are charged from 10 to 80 percent in 30 minutes using a fast charger.

At launch, the new BMW 5 Series station wagon will also be available in a 197 hp (145 kW) 520d Touring diesel version with rear- or all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission. This will be followed in the summer by the BMW 530e Touring, whose 190 hp (140 kW) two-liter turbo is supported by a 184 hp (135 kW) electric motor, increasing total power to 299 hp (220 kW). Standard consumption of 0.9 liters per 100 kilometers compared to an electric range of 84 kilometers. If desired, the hybrid station wagon is also offered with a 4×4 option. The most powerful diesel, the 540d Touring, has 299 hp (220 kW) and can only be ordered with all-wheel drive.

The official market launch of the BMW i5/5 Series will take place at the end of May. The base price of the BMW 520d Touring is 72,700 francs; The all-wheel drive version starts from 77,200 francs. While the basic electric model of the BMW i5 eDrive 40 is available at prices starting from 87,900 francs, the i5 M60 xDrive already significantly exceeds the 100,000 franc threshold at 126,900 francs.
