Why only in summer? During the winter sports holiday, we also want to camp and enjoy nature. What should we consider?
M. Hunziker, Giswil

Camping in the winter is more challenging and adventurous than when the temperatures outside are more pleasant in the spring or summer. However, if you pay attention to a few points, it can be an attractive and recommendable natural experience.

It is important to prepare yourself and your vehicle well for your winter camping adventure and consider the following points in addition to providing yourself with good winter clothing before you set off.

Propane gas lasts 2 to 5 days

Your camper should be winterized or winterized. This means: A working heater on board is a must. You also need good insulation. You can achieve this by using thermal mats or awnings. Most camping heaters run on propane gas carried in 11-liter bottles. One bottle is sufficient for two to five days in winter storage, depending on outside temperature, vehicle size and heating requirements.

A frost-free water source ensures worry-free winter fun. Therefore, your caravan always needs to be slightly heated to prevent the water from freezing. If you leave the camper for a few days, be sure to drain the water.

Driving training on slippery surfaces

Be careful to install it correctly, especially during winter months. The effect of incorrect weight distribution is even more striking on slippery roads or slopes. Speaking of slippery roads: Are you comfortable driving your camper or camper on icy or snowy roads? Probably not. That’s why I recommend you take driving training at one of our traffic centers where you can practice winter driving with a caravan or camper on special sliding surfaces.

And last but not least: Never go into the mountains during the cold season without winter tires. Make sure you take your snow chains with you and put them on “dry” at home before leaving for training. Do not fill your vehicle completely in the plains. There is Alpine diesel, which guarantees resistance to cold temperatures down to minus 30 degrees in the mountains.

If you take all these tips into consideration, your planned camping trip in the snow will actually turn into an attractive winter display.
