Particular attention will be paid to the Delahaye brand at Retromobile 2024 in Paris. Celebrating its anniversary this year…
Stefan Grundhoff

The 48th edition of the Retromobile Salon in Paris will take place until Sunday, February 4. The exhibition at the Paris-Expo exhibition center in the 15th arrondissement is one of the world’s largest and most important exhibitions of two- and four-wheeled classic cars and their accessories, and is therefore always worth a visit, even for classic fans in Switzerland.

There are important anniversaries to celebrate this year. For example, the 130th anniversary of the legendary Delahaye brand, the 100th birthday of the former British car manufacturer MG (now owned by the Chinese group SAIC) or the historic Linas-Montlhéry racetrack, where countless records have been broken since 1924.

“Planer” in Paris

Mercedes celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Mercedes SL in Paris. The Swabians brought with them the 300 SL racing prototype (W 194/11), which was rarely shown to the public. Developed for the 1953 motorsport year, based on the 300 SL racing car, this prototype was referred to by many simply as the “planer” due to its angular shape. However, it was never used in races as Mercedes focused on entering Formula 1 from 1954 onwards.

In addition to many rare vehicles, there is much more for old fans to see related to their hobby. For example, collectors can learn more about popular restoration techniques or vintage car production know-how in special workshops run by the specialist Federation Française des Vehicules d’Epoque FFVE.

And if you want, you can put your newly acquired knowledge into practice in the field. Because Retromobile is a much more interesting and comprehensive exchange of parts than other big classic events.

Ferrari and Porsche from Killy

Of course, you can also buy finished classic vehicles. This year, the focus of the auction organized by organizer Artcurial Motorcars was primarily Ferraris. 14 examples are being examined, including a Ferrari 250 GT Spyder California sold new in Hollywood in 1958. Or in the 1960s, Scaglietti’s Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competitionizione was said to fetch at least nine million francs.

There are other complete collections, such as the Swiss collection, which includes the rare Ferrari models 275 GTB Berlinetta and the hardtop Ferrari 250 GT Convertible Pininfarina Series 2. Ski enthusiasts beware, too: The 911 S, which was sold new in 1968 to Jean-Claude Killy, a French ski enthusiast and Porsche fan at the time, is also being sold at auction.
