Ten years ago, Porsche introduced the Macan, the second SUV in the German sports car maker’s portfolio after the larger Cayenne. Originally offered with gasoline and diesel engines, the Macan quickly became a bestseller. However, when the new generation SUV introduced now is presented to dealers in July, internal combustion engines will be the end; at least in Europe. Thus, Macan will be the second fully electric model after the Taycan sports sedan.

Visually impressive, the electric SUV looks both sporty and powerful thanks to its sharpened proportions. Technicians paid particular attention to aerodynamics to increase range and reduce fuel consumption. Thanks to technical tricks such as active and passive aero elements, the Macan achieves an air resistance value of 0.25; Almost no SUV on the market is this aerodynamic.

More muscle, more space

Active aerodynamics includes parts such as the adaptive rear spoiler or active cooling fins on the front air intakes. So-called air curtains, as known from the renewed Cayenne, also optimize the airflow under the main headlights, optionally offered with matrix LED technology. The LED daytime running lights move further back towards the passenger compartment, and the LED light strip with Porsche lettering in the middle dominates the rear. Also, thanks to the prominent shoulders, the back looks much more muscular than before.

Compared to the previous internal combustion engine, the length of the electric Macan has increased by almost six centimeters to 4.78 metres; The wheelbase also increased by 86 millimeters to 2.89 meters. The new Macan’s rims can go up to 22 inches. Inside the electric car, more cargo space is gained thanks to electrification. Luggage volume increases to 540 liters with the seats up and 1348 liters with the seats folded. There is now also a small cargo area under the hood, called Frunk, which holds an additional 84 litres. This means the new Macan offers 127 liters more loading volume than the previous model; The trailer load is up to two tons.

Up to 639 HP

Its cockpit is similar to that of the larger Taycan. There is a freestanding 12.9-inch instrument cluster behind the steering wheel. The gear selector is located on the dashboard to the right behind the steering wheel. The 10.9-inch infotainment screen, based on the new operating system, is located on the center console. Additionally, the Macan is the first model to feature a head-up display with augmented reality technology: Virtual elements such as navigation arrows are projected onto the road directly into the driver’s field of vision. In addition to modern digital user interfaces, there are also dedicated analog controls such as air conditioning controllers. A 10.9-inch passenger display is also available as an option, where the passenger can stream video or make adjustments to the infotainment system.

The electric SUV celebrates its world premiere with two versions: Macan 4 and Macan Turbo. Porsche relies on permanently excited electric motors on the front and rear axles. The electric machines produce maximum power of 408 hp (300 kW) in the Macan 4 and 639 hp (470 kW) in the turbo version. The maximum torque is 650 or 1130 Nm and is transmitted to all four wheels. Generous electric power takes the SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.2 or 3.3 seconds. In the Macan 4, acceleration ends at 220 km/h, while the turbo continues to deliver power up to 260 km/h.

New electric platform

The energy of the electric motors is provided by a 100 kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery. The battery is a central component of the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) with 800-volt architecture developed together with Audi. Porsche’s Macan is the Volkswagen Group’s first car based on this platform, in line with the soon-to-be-launched Audi Q6 E-Tron. Thanks to the 270 kW charging power, it only takes 21 minutes for the charge to go from ten percent to 80 percent. At 400-volt charging stations, a high-voltage switch at the battery splits the 800-volt battery into two batteries, each with a nominal voltage of 400 volts. This provides efficient charging with up to 135 kW output without the need for an additional high voltage booster. In total, the Macan 4 can travel up to 613 kilometers, while the Macan Turbo can travel up to 591 kilometers.

Optional rear axle steering is used for the first time on the Macan, meaning the turning circle is significantly smaller. Optional shock absorbers with two-valve technology are also available, increasing the distance between comfort and performance (more information about Porsche’s new miracle chassis is available here). The first deliveries of the electric Macan will begin in July. Macan 4 is offered for sale at prices starting from 95,800 francs, and Turbo from 131,200 francs.

Sales in the EU will soon be discontinued as the current combustion Macan no longer complies with the new European registration regulations. In Switzerland, the current generation with gasoline engines will continue to be sold even after the launch of the new Macan. However, it is unclear how long it will last. “While stocks last,” says a Porsche Switzerland spokesman.
