Tesla Model Y will be Europe’s best-selling car in 2023, according to preliminary figures from market research company Dataforce. This means that the electric SUV is a bestseller not only in Switzerland but also across Europe.
For the first time, electric cars are among the best sellers
Last year, 254,822 Model Y units were offered to European customers. Tesla is breaking many records with the electric vehicle it produces in California. Among other things, Model Y became the first best-selling electric car in Europe. It is also the first premium and mid-size car to reach the top of the winners’ podium. Moreover, Model Y is the first modern car not produced in Europe. Right behind it is the small car Dacia Sandero with 235,893 registered vehicles.
Tesla Model Y has been the European leader for seven out of twelve months; Dacia Sandero for four months and VW T-Roc for one month. Third place goes to Volkswagen’s compact SUV. While French models Renault Clio and Peugeot 208 took fourth and fifth place, it was Peugeot 208 that took the winner’s crown in Europe in 2022, and the long-time leader VW Golf in 2021.
Although Model Y experienced a 24 percent sales decline in December 2023, the electric SUV continued to be number one that month with 24 thousand 394 vehicle sales. The Model Y received the most competition from the small car Renault Clio; Sales of the French small car increased by 29 percent to 20,691 units. In December, Dacia Sandero also entered a close race with the VW Golf for third place. In the end Sandero was only 163 points ahead of the Golf.
