Visually, the CS stands out with various carbon parts on the roof and bonnet, front splitter and rear diffuser. Its striking front end provides an incredible presence on the road, especially thanks to its yellow daytime running lights. When we look at the interior, we see that every effort has been made to save as much weight as possible: Here too, we see carbon as far as the eye can see, from the seats to the center console. Getting in and out of these seats becomes a gymnastics exercise, but once you get into an attack position they provide excellent support. All carbon parts combined reduce the weight of the M3 CS by almost 20 kilograms compared to the rival version (sedan, 4×4). The curb weight of the Bavarian Kraftmeier is 1,765 kilograms.

In the first few meters we did not notice any significant differences compared to the usual M3. Initially the inline-six roars a little louder than usual from the sports exhaust system, but otherwise we think we’re in the standard M3. However, if we then press the individually adjustable M1 or M2 buttons on the steering wheel, the CS turns into a road monster. 550 hp (405 kW) is transmitted to all four wheels by a three-litre biturbo engine, meaning the flagship reaches 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds; but that’s only 0.1 seconds faster than the standard M3. The CS will definitely be the king of the left motorway lane in Germany: the Super 3 Series reaches a top speed of 302 km/h instead of 250 km/h.

It’s surprising how connected we feel to the car and the road after a short time. Thanks to the fully variable, active differential in the rear axle gear, the Bavarian powerhouse never slips when cornering, even at high speeds. Subsequent acceleration is really fun – especially when we change gears ourselves using the small paddles behind the steering wheel – the driver can also influence the gearshift characteristics of the transmission using the Drivelogic button integrated into the gear selector.

The steering works precisely and provides plenty of feedback, the adaptive chassis is designed to be sporty and robust, but can also be adjusted to be more comfortable if desired. This means longer distances on highways won’t translate into driving with moguls. In closed spaces, the drift mode, worthy of BMW M, can be activated, which analyzes and evaluates lateral movements. In addition, the driver can switch to 100 percent rear-wheel drive, which we know from the normal M3.

It should be known by now that German premium manufacturers charge very high fees to their customers. However, when we look at the price table, we still have to swallow empty air: BMW demands a huge fee of 190,000 francs for the M3 CS! Our test car even fetched an incredible 202,842 francs with additional extras such as the ceramic braking system (7,929 francs) – an incredible amount of money even for an absolutely exclusive racing machine like the M3 CS. Additionally, the super M3 consumed an average of 11.9 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers on our test tour; This is normal considering its performance, but it no longer fits well with today’s times.

The CS, the most powerful and most exclusive M3 series of all time, managed to convince us in the test: despite its incredible power, the all-wheel drive car is always easy to control and can even be used as an everyday car. You can use it on your daily commute without any problems. The M3 CS also scores points for its powerful looks, plenty of carbon on the exterior and interior, and, as always, BMW’s finest craftsmanship. But for this superb overall package, enthusiasts will need to dig deep into their pockets if they want to park this outstanding M3 in their driveways. Potential buyers need to hurry: The special model will only be available to order until the end of February.
