history
Ford’s F Series has been the best-selling pickup truck series in North America for 46 years! Definitely among the bestsellers is the F-150, which has been at the top of the sales charts in the USA for 41 years (also interesting: the USA – the automobile country of extremes). The success story will continue to be written electric: The electric version of the F-150 Lightning was launched in America in May 2022 and has received more than 200,000 pre-orders to date. A limited number of mega electric vehicles are now coming to Europe; Switzerland ranks first.
2
Dimensions
In the US, everything is one size larger, including cars. At 6.29 meters long and 2.06 meters wide, the F-150 Lightning looks like a monster truck on Switzerland’s narrow mountain roads; For Americans, it’s like a VW Golf for Europeans. Thanks to the mega wheelbase of 3.70 meters, passengers rest in the back of the double cabin, as in a luxury limousine.
3
Payload/towing capacity
In the USA, the F-150 Lightning weighs up to four tons! It had to slim down for Europe, where cars have a maximum weight of 3.5 tonnes: thanks to complex modifications such as wiring harnesses, only 2.9 tonnes are shown on the vehicle registration certificate. This means the payload is at least 600 kilos. The electric truck can tow an additional 3.5 tonnes on the trailer hitch; This is the best value in the electric car segment.
4
Loading area/franc
The loading area, 1.70 meters long and 1.29 meters wide, accommodates a loading volume of 1500 liters up to the upper edge. In order to be able to climb into the almost meter-high loading area as comfortably and without gymnastics as possible, Ford installed a step with an extendable handle – cleverly! Speaking of which: Since there’s no powerful V8 engine under the massive bonnet, the front “hatch” opens at the push of a button, revealing 400 liters more storage space.
5
cockpit
The more solid the F-150 Lightning looks from the outside, the more modern its cockpit is. The 15.5-inch touch screen, already known from Ford’s Mustang Mach-E sports car, is located on the center console and can be connected wirelessly to the smartphone via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and can be easily controlled by voice. For the driver, there are 12-inch digital instruments and electrically adjustable pedals, another smart feature. The standard 360-degree camera helps when maneuvering.
6
Driving behavior
We are a little nervous at first as we take the first few meters in the electric pickup under the 20-inch strong aluminum. But all worries are unfounded: despite its impressive dimensions, the F-150 Lightning moves surprisingly effortlessly, is very clear due to its boxy shape, and is whisper-quiet inside like most other electric cars when driving. Only the steering wheel is a bit large for European sensibilities, which makes turning maneuvers an effective exercise for the biceps in the long run.
7
acceleration
If you want, the mega pick-up can also offer many shows. This is made possible by two electric motors on the front and rear axles, which together deliver up to 458 hp (337 kW) and an incredible 1050 Nm of torque to all four wheels. Weighing almost three tonnes, the powerful athlete sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in an incredible 4.6 seconds (!). After the sprint frenzy, all that remains is a mark on the seat and a huge grin on his face.
8.
Range
According to Ford, anyone who doesn’t constantly need the full power of an all-wheel drive vehicle should be able to travel up to 427 kilometers. In cold weather around Lake Lucerne, the screen showed approximately 100 kilometers less distance. This is made possible by the 91 kilowatt-hour battery under the body, which is expected to be charged from 15 percent to 80 percent in 39 minutes using a 150 kW fast charger. Unfortunately, bidirectional charging isn’t possible like the US version – but the F-150 Lightning can also power external devices thanks to a 2.3 kW socket in the cabin and load area.
9
Price
Approximately 1,400 electric pickups are coming to Europe in the first batch, 100 of which are destined for Switzerland. The price of the Ford F-150 Lightning in the presented “Lariat Launch Edition” may initially seem high at 127,000 francs. But the electric four-wheel-drive vehicle, finished in striking “Metallic Antimatter Blue” paint, is equipped with almost every extra equipment imaginable; only winter wheels or cargo compartment cover need to be ordered separately.
