Even Mercedes fans are starting to lose sight of this: The Open SL was a premium dream car for decades. But then fat powerful SUVs became the new status symbol. If star lovers were still buying roadsters, they would be more likely to buy the sharper AMG GT rather than the increasingly ponderous SL. The series was about to end, until Mercedes thought about it and finally presented a worthy successor to the roadster icon at the end of 2021, further sharpened by its sports subsidiary AMG. Since then, the SL has been driving like an open sibling alongside the newly closed-down AMG GT, and now even outsells the newly introduced second-generation mega coupe!

Double heart beats inside

This is made possible thanks to the new top model with the somewhat cumbersome model name Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E-Performance. Behind the name lies a clear dream sled, the likes of which have never been seen before in the roadster world. In the SL 63 SE, the four-liter V8 biturbo engine, already known from the SL and GT, is combined with a 204 hp (150 kW) electric motor at the rear axle. The plug-in hybrid system currently installed in the four-door model of the AMG GT has a huge total power of 816 hp (600 kW) and a maximum torque of 1420 Nm. The 2+2-seater vehicle accelerates to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 317 km/h. It goes without saying that the mega roadster broke all previous records in the traditional series. The previous top model, the SL 63 4Matic+, has to make do with 585 hp (430 kW) and 800 Nm.

And the Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E-Performance even glides for several kilometers without emissions: The 6.1 kilowatt-hour battery is theoretically enough for a purely electric journey of 13 kilometers. Charging is carried out via the installed 3.7 kW onboard AC charger. However, the electric motor is designed primarily to provide assistance during starting and acceleration, not as the sole source of propulsion. To improve stability: on paper, the standard consumption of the super sports car is 7.7 liters per 100 kilometers. However, if the speed is suitable for the type, this value is unlikely to be achieved in practice, as is often the case with plug-in hybrids.

technical fireworks

To ensure that the all-wheel drive vehicle can deliver the promised performance on the road, Mercedes is pulling out all the stops in terms of technology: the vehicle features an air suspension chassis with active roll stabilization as well as rear axle steering and mechanical steering. limited slip differential. There is also an active aerodynamic element in the lower body in front of the V8 block. It reacts to different driving modes and automatically extends downward by 40 millimeters at 80 km/h; The so-called Venturi effect also pulls the car towards the road. The extendable, five-way adjustable spoiler, seamlessly integrated into the boot lid, further improves the aerodynamics of the new SL top model.

The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 S E-Performance is expected to be launched in spring 2024. What prices are not yet known. The 585 hp power of the non-electric SL 63 costs at least 220,100 francs.
