Following existing electric models such as the minimally electric iOn and e-308 from 2010, Peugeot is launching its third model generation with electric drive.

A Peugeot presentation on the race track? This has never happened before! Just driving at racing pace won’t work: “The four-wheel drive versions are still prototypes; we cannot use them on public roads,” explains project manager Gaëtan Demoulin. For this reason, we can only use the upcoming Peugeot e-3008 in closed areas with its 4×4 version.

Peugeot’s next crossover will be launched in the first quarter of 2024, the first of its new driving platform called STLA-M. In the future, it will carry all decent mid-range models from 4 to 4.5 meters in length from the 14 brands in the Stellantis Group, as an ideal compromise between range, performance and still bearable costs. However, while rivals such as Renault rely on fully electric platforms, Peugeot continues to operate hybridly; The 3008 will also be available with a mildly hybridized gasoline engine with a 48-volt system or as a plug-in hybrid.

There are also combustion engines

So why this strategy? After all, Peugeot wants to be Europe’s No. 1 electric brand by 2025? “If we also enable internal combustion engines, we will have no disadvantages with the electric version,” says chief engineer Hervé Scheidegger. For cost reasons Peugeot also uses an operating voltage of 400 volts; 800 volts for ultra-fast charging like Hyundai, Kia or Porsche should only be available on the largest Stellantis platform with triple-digit battery capacity. In this case, only electric motors will be tolerated, says Scheidegger.

The upcoming e-3008 will be available with two batteries with a net capacity of 73 or 98 kilowatt hours (kWh). The former is offered in 213 hp (157 kW) front-wheel drive and 326 hp (240 kW) all-wheel drive versions, each with a range of 525 kilometers. Are both values the same? Yes, because the front engine always does the main work, and the engine on the rear axle is started only when necessary. The larger battery is reserved for a long-range version with a slightly increased output of 231 hp (170 kW) and a range of 700 kilometers.

Living room-quality high-tech environment

A little quibble before the test tour in the basic front-wheel drive car. Is the 3008 an SUV coupe? Demoulin says this is not true: on the Coupé the roofline drops from the middle B-pillar, but on the 3008 it only lowers after the rear side door. That’s why the five-seater is a fastback, not a hatchback SUV. In practice this makes a difference because it means there is full headroom in the back. From the outside the car looks much larger, with an increase in length of around ten centimeters compared to the current model. The squat back is particularly impressive.

Inside, there’s a cockpit straight out of the electric car design textbook: two seemingly seamless screens for the gauges and infotainment system, and most of the controls have been moved towards the steering wheel. That’s a good thing: Before, you had to look to the side to find the drive program button, but now it’s on the center console and in your field of vision. However, there’s the typical Peugeot twist, with a very small steering wheel that’s flattened at the top and bottom, so you’re looking over the instruments rather than looking at them. The small touchscreen on the right now offers twelve configurable buttons for your favorite functions, instead of just six. Additionally, speed, range and battery indicators are positioned side by side; Screens placed on several levels on top of each other, as on the e-308, were probably too confusing. The high-tech ambiance is balanced by soft surfaces and fabric coverings on the cockpit and doors.

Finally adjustable recovery

Let’s go! When the drive button to the right of the steering wheel is moved to D position, the e-3008 accelerates; Not brutally, but faster than its curb weight of almost 2.2 tonnes would suggest. With the small steering wheel, you can maneuver nimbly around corners. Steering feedback is good, but the springs and shock absorbers are tuned to the more comfortable side.

Finally, a Stellantis electric car has three stages of recovery that can be controlled using a rocker switch on the steering wheel. It’s a shame it doesn’t allow one-pedal driving: even at the highest setting, the e-3008 won’t come to a complete stop; You must always apply the mechanical brake. The transition between braking via energy recovery and engaging the brake pads is also quite abrupt.

We cannot ignore the factory consumption of 16.7 kilowatt hours (kWh) per 100 kilometers. In city traffic, Peugeot promises a power of under 14.0 kWh with high energy recovery during braking. But 18.5 kWh/100 km is not bad at all for a fast ride and a fairly heavy weight.

Charging with 160 kW

You can finally charge a Stellantis electric car with more than 100 kW of charging power – the e-3008 produces 160 kW and thus replenishes its battery from 20 to 80 percent in 30 minutes using the fast charger. Peugeot also eliminates the lack of traction power of its previous electric vehicles with a trailer load of 1250 to 1350 kilograms (braked).

It starts with the new 3008 in the first quarter of 2024: There is the basic electric car e-3008, which starts at 50,500 francs, and the mildly hybridized gasoline engine, with an output of 136 hp (100 kW) and a consumption of 6.3 l/100 km, starting at 39 francs. 100 francs. But two electric versions with large batteries or all-wheel drive will probably wait until 2025. Plug-in hybrid will also come later. If there is not enough space, you will have to wait for the previously announced XXL version called 5008.
