Thick winter jackets give a false sense of security in the car because they are well padded.

Many people drive without a jacket in winter. But I feel safer in the car with a thick winter jacket. What’s right?
G. Bossart, Dübendorf ZH

In the event of an accident, it is important that the passengers are attached to the vehicle as directly as possible and therefore brake equally. It is therefore very important that the belt fits as directly on the body as possible over the collarbone and hips.

Lots of movement space

That is why winter clothes need to be given special attention in the car: The belt should never be worn over large winter jackets, otherwise there will be too much space between the belt and the body and the tension will be greater in the event of an accident.

For children with this condition, this may even cause their narrow upper body to slip through the straps of the child seat and be thrown forward. Therefore, winter coats must either be removed or opened so that the belt can be pulled tightly against the body.
