The 2024 vignette will be available starting December 1, 2023. For the first time, most drivers now choose between an adhesive vignette or the new e-vignette, introduced in August this year. The retail price of 40 francs and the period of validity from December of the previous year to January of the following year remained unchanged for both models.
Although the e-vignette was introduced in August this year, the topic becomes relevant for most people only at the beginning of the year. Drivers will now be able to choose whether they want to use stickers or a digital version when using motorways.
E-vignette advantage
Unlike the adhesive vignette, the e-vignette is attached to the license plate, not to the vehicle. This provides a great advantage especially for changeable license plate holders and people who purchase new vehicles during the year. Not to mention you can save yourself the trouble of scraping off the old pattern.
TCS recommends that the e-sticker be purchased only via the “Via” web portal of the Federal Office for Customs and Border Protection (BAZG) at www.e-vignette.ch. Other providers often charge a higher price. When purchasing, the vehicle type, country of registration and license plate must be entered in the form. You can also choose whether the recording will be public or not. The “Public” option is preferably chosen by people who share a vehicle (rental cars, carpooling). You can check on the portal whether there is a valid e-vignette for the license plate in question. If the option is not selected, the query will not return any results.
The first users were probably foreign tourists traveling south. Owners of motorcycles, trailers or vintage cars could also benefit from the electronic vignette. However, it is not possible to replace the adhesive vignette with an e-vignette.
Adhesive vignette properties remain unchanged
Sticky vignettes can still be purchased from reputed outlets and TCS chapter points. The vignette must be attached to the inside of the windshield in a clearly visible manner. Among other things, the law prohibits affixing the label with adhesive strips or storing it in the glove compartment. The vignette should be attached to the edge of the windshield or behind the rearview mirror without obstructing the view.
Although there is no law stating that only valid vignette can be pasted on the windshield, TCS recommends removing the old vignette. Police can ticket drivers if their visibility is restricted due to one or more incidents.
The amount of the fine has not changed: drivers traveling on the highway without a ignition must be fined 200 francs. An e-vignette is checked by random checking of license plates. (SDA)
