The obligation to wear a seat belt came later in Switzerland than elsewhere: it was decided by the Federal Council in 1975 and was only implemented after a (rarely accepted!) referendum in July 1981. Only at the front. Rear passengers have had to wear seat belts since 1994, and passengers in the vehicle have had to wear seat belts since 1999. Many exceptions, such as taxi drivers and tractors, have been removed. Penalty rate: 60 francs.
Ever since Blick reported unfair fines for allegedly not wearing a seat belt, many people have been wondering: Are there exceptions to the seat belt requirement? The general rule is this: If there is a belt, it must be worn. Good to know: This also applies to private property (e.g. supermarket car park) if it is not cordoned off or driving is expressly prohibited. Mistakes are often made when wearing a seat belt; You can find more information about this here. But the occasional life-saving “Click!” You can completely trust the sign (but please don’t). disclaimer:
one
Maneuver at walking pace
At walking speed (rule of thumb: up to approximately 5 km/h), drivers (but not passengers!) are allowed to wear their seat belts when maneuvering (e.g. parking). Common misconception: Backing up is clearly not exempt, but is only allowed for short distances and in this case only at walking pace.
2
Delivery service to the neighborhood
In a neighborhood door-to-door delivery service, for example, a postal worker or package courier is allowed to work without a belt, but only at speeds up to 25 km/h.
3
medical certificate
In rare cases where it is medically justified, wearing a seat belt is unacceptable. A medical report is required for exemption. If you forward this to the road traffic office you will receive a document valid throughout the EU.
4
Field, forest and factory
In factory buildings, forest and field roads, drivers and passengers who do not travel at speeds above 25 km per hour are not allowed to wear seat belts. The same applies to drivers and passengers of work vehicles, tractors and motor cars; unless they are driving at a maximum speed of 25 km/h.
5
public buses
In the phrase “regional scheduled transportation”, with the expression “licensed transportation companies”, drivers or passengers are not required to wear seat belts on postal buses or other regular buses that come from stop to stop. Everyone getting on tour vehicles is required to wear a seat belt!
6
Medical and disabled transportation
If people need to be cared for, caregivers cannot wear seat belts as passengers in an ambulance or disabled transportation bus.
7
Classic car without seat belts
Unlike other countries, in Switzerland there is no obligation to renew vintage cars that previously did not have seat belts (belts were only mandatory from 1972). If you don’t have a belt to begin with, you can drive without them. If optional or retrofit belts are installed, they must be installed.
