After Corona and four cancellations in a row from February 26 to March 3, 2024, this was supposed to be a big new start. But the Geneva International Motor Show GIMS, as the Geneva Motor Show has called itself for several years, is also fighting for 2024 exhibitors. Organizers recently proudly announced Renault’s commitment. No wonder the French have hugely important innovations to show off for 2024 and 2025 with the electric R4 and R5; The public trade fair in Geneva, not far from home, is a perfect fit.
But if you listen to other manufacturers around the world shortly before the registration deadline at the end of October, things are looking bleak for GIMS organisers. There is little interest, especially among German manufacturers, in coming to Geneva in 2024. An exclusive investigation by the German trade magazine “Automobilwoche” shows that none of the German premium manufacturers will be present in Geneva next year.
Mercedes and BMW are missing
Communication platforms at Mercedes-Benz are constantly and individually controlled to reach target groups and customers. “The number and scope of brand presence will be more strongly focused on new models, new presentation formats and synergies than in the past,” a company spokesperson told “Automobilwoche” in marketing jargon. But then he clearly states: “After careful consideration, Mercedes-Benz AG will not be able to participate in the Geneva Motor Show.”
It’s similar in BMW. The event and trade show environment was strategically realigned several years ago. “We added our own new formats but deleted others. These include, for example, trade fairs in Geneva, Paris and Detroit. “Therefore, we will not be in Geneva in 2024 either,” a BMW spokesperson told Automobilwoche.
VW and Audi are not coming
The Volkswagen Group leaves the decision to individual brands. One thing is certain: VW will have no manufacturing presence in Geneva. The same applies to premium subsidiary Audi. However, they emphasize: “The fact that Audi will not be there in 2024 is not a general decision against Geneva.” Instead, the event schedule is re-evaluated each year based on product planning and timing of premieres. This suggests that Audi has nothing new to offer in spring 2024.
VW Group brands Porsche, Seat and Cupra have not yet officially decided; There are still a few days left until the end of October and the registration deadline. Only: “Automobilwoche” says that the three brands are unlikely to be exhibited in Geneva, citing well-informed sources of the company.
It looks like the 100th anniversary of the once-proud Geneva Motor Show, from February 26 to March 3, 2024, could be an inconsequential exhibition featuring only two or three major manufacturers and a few obscure suppliers from China . us and a handful of exotic sports car manufacturers. So how did the new hall president, Alexandre de Senarclens (48), appointed since July 1, 2023, recently quote: “The hall does not necessarily have to be magnificent in 2024. The important thing is that it happens.”
