Suisse Caravan Salon opened today. This year, Switzerland’s largest trade fair for travel on two and four wheels presents around 360 exhibitors and their caravan-related innovations in over 32,000 square meters at the Bernexpo exhibition center in Bern.
It wasn’t until the Corona pandemic that the Swiss discovered traveling in their own rolling homes. The market for caravans and motorhomes has been growing for many years, but sales of the light commercial vehicles that form the basis of motorhomes have repeatedly come under pressure in recent years. In some years, VW’s Bulli even topped the Swiss rankings of all vehicles sold, with the California camper conversion giving customers no small part of that figure. In comparison, Switzerland has now surpassed its neighbors Germany and Austria as the camping nation: we are right next to the Dutch as camping world champions!
All about caravans
In Bern you can see new campers, mobile homes and caravans, all imaginable accessories for camping and offers from travel providers from Europe’s most popular camping regions. Ready-made vehicle manufacturers, converters and car importers with serial caravans are also present at the fair. There are two courses outside to test your driving skills; Speeches and information about traveling on wheels will be given on the event stage.
TCS, Switzerland’s largest campsite operator, is also represented in the Bernexpo halls. However, since parking spaces were not available as usual due to construction work in the exhibition areas, the parking spaces of visitors camping with their vehicles had to be cleared.
Numerous Swiss premieres
There are also plenty of Swiss premieres to see at the 62nd edition of the Suisse Caravan Salon: VW importer Amag shows a study of the upcoming new VW T7 California: Arguably the world’s most popular camper van will also be available with a plug-in socket for charging hybrid The kitchen concept is completely new: A second sliding door on the left in the travel direction allows the kitchen to be pulled out – creating space for cooking.
Mercedes comes with two new products under the Marco Polo camping label. Alongside the newly introduced V-Series, a caravan version is also being launched, such as the small all-electric EQT with a living/sleeping extension, kitchen and bed under a retractable roof. Compact electric car turns into an electric hotel room.
The trend is electrification
Also completely new: Ford’s next-generation Transit Custom Nugget The spatial concept follows a different principle than most competitors – the kitchen is at the back and the sunroof rises above it. There’s now a plug-in hybrid drive and a solar roof. Opel is also showing its caravan based on the Zafira, and Stellantis’ sister brand Citroën is unveiling its Spacetourer with caravan conversion at the trade show – but these are just a few of the various caravan and motorhome offerings at the trade show.
Approximately 55,000 visitors visited the hall last year. And this time too the crowds are likely to be big: 235,000 interested people visited the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf (D), Europe’s largest caravan trade fair, in August. The Austrian camping trade fair in Wels also recorded a record number of visitors last week.
