This week, Google released the first Street View images of cities and landscapes in the Panama so that people around the world can tour and discover the country virtually from their mobile devices and computers.
The images of Panama, which can now be seen on Google Maps, were collected during 2022 and 2023, allowing you to take a virtual tour of Panama City, Colón, David, La Chorrera, Santiago and Penonomé, among others.
Highways and major arteries of the country were also added to facilitate the mobility of people.
The collection process was carried out by vehicles equipped with special cameras that take photos as the cars and collection tools circulate.
More than 20,000 kilometers of roads have been covered in Panama, including the capital cities and their main arteries.
After the images are captured, they go through a calculation process to prepare and upload them Google Maps. The process involves stitching photos together to create a single panoramic image.
Furthermore, in order to protect people’s privacy, faces are blurred so that those photographed in passing during collection are not identified. Likewise, the license plates of the vehicles seen in the pictures are blurred.
From now on you can visit famous ones Panama Canal (from panoramic images of the Centenario Bridge), which connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, and in addition allows the passage of more than 12 thousand vessels a year; walk through the old town to appreciate its colonial architecture and cobbled streets; and have incredible views of the city, the canal and the Bridge of America as you travel along the Amador Causeway. You can also access the Cinta Costera viewpoint, a unique promenade with a view of the Panama City skyline.
That’s not all, you can also see the Gatun Locks of the Panama Canal, one of the greatest engineering works of its time, and the moment when the container passes through the gates of the place.
Simultaneously with the journey through the historical and cultural heritage of the city with a panoramic and 360° view of Panama Viejo – declared a world heritage by UNESCO in 2003; the Ruins of Portobelo, Fort Santiago; Arco Chato and the Old Panama Wall.
“The new images represent Panama’s window to the world and allow it to be more present than ever on the world tourism map to make its most important destinations and natural attractions more accessible. Through Street View, Google seeks to preserve and promote culture and access to all corners of the world as part of its mission to democratize access to information,” said Cynthia Wei, Google Maps Program Manager.
How to start this virtual tour? From your computer, you just need to open Google Maps in your browser and drag Pegman – the little orange doll in the lower right corner – to the place you want to visit. You can also view a specific location and search for Street View images at the bottom of the information panel.
While on your mobile device, you need to mark a location and select a 360° image to see images of the surroundings and easily explore them anytime, anywhere, free and online.
