I hear of conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists on signalized hiking trails. When exactly can I use my bicycle or e-bike on hiking trails?

Hiking trails can generally be used by bicycles and electric bikes, as long as there is no driving ban or they are in the forest. Driving bans either target all vehicles as a “general driving ban” or do not only include motor vehicles. In this case, only fast electric bikes that support up to 45 km/h are included because they are considered motorized bikes. Riding of supported bicycles and slow e-bikes at speeds up to 25 km/h is still permitted.

Pay attention to driving restrictions

Different cantonal regulations apply in the forest. As a rule, cycling and e-bike riding is allowed on asphalt or gravel forest paths or paths and on signposted bicycle or mountain bike routes – prohibitions are always marked. Driving on narrow roads or footpaths, called “single paths”, is regulated with varying degrees of strictness, but is generally prohibited in many cantons. Off-road driving is prohibited anywhere in the forest.

If cyclists are on hiking trails, they should be considerate of pedestrians and hikers and give them the right of way. If cyclists identify themselves early by ringing or shouting and adjusting their speed, they contribute to a conflict-free and enjoyable co-existence.
