According to the research, the rather expensive Swiss mobile phone subscriptions are becoming even more expensive – that’s what you need to know

Moneyland has taken a closer look at the price changes for prepaid offers and mobile phone subscriptions. Here are the key findings about Wingo, M-Budget Mobile and Co.

The Swiss mobile communications market is currently defined by three trends. According to a study, the more expensive providers have generally increased compared to the previous year, while the cheaper ones have become slightly cheaper. Promotional offers are also becoming increasingly out of fashion.

In an analysis of numerous subscription offers from different providers published on Wednesday, the online comparison service Moneyland.ch focused on the cheapest prepaid and subscription offers. The cost calculation was carried out based on the three profiles ‘light user’, ‘normal user’ and ‘heavy user’.

Little, normal or a lot?
According to moneyland.ch, people who want to surf and make unlimited calls are classified as ‘frequent users’. That is why only offers with fixed data and telephony rates were included in the comparison.

The ‘normal user profile’ is based on a person in Switzerland transferring 5 gigabytes (GB) of data per month and making 30 domestic calls for an average of three minutes.

For the ‘Low User’ profile, Moneyland assumes that a person in Switzerland makes on average only five two-minute phone calls per month and uses only 500 megabytes (MB) of mobile data.

Who raised the prices?

Compared to the October 2022 survey, according to the survey, with the exception of a prepaid offer, only mobile phone subscriptions are affected by price increases. By comparison, the more expensive providers have increased their prices compared to the previous year, while there have been no price increases for the cheaper providers.

“Infrequent users of the six providers Coop Mobile, Lebara, M-Budget Mobile, Salt, Sunrise and Wingo pay more as new customers for the cheapest mobile phone subscription than in the last moneyland.ch survey in October 2022.”
“Normal users pay more for the cheapest mobile phone subscription from the six providers Coop Mobile, Lebara, M-Budget Mobile, Salt, Sunrise and Yallo. The increase amounts to about 2 percent; only Sunrise has a significantly higher price increase.

For normal users, no cheap prepaid offer costs more than last year.”

“If heavy users take out a new mobile subscription today, they will pay more for the cheapest subscription from the six providers Coop Mobile, Lebara, M-Budget Mobile, Salt, Sunrise and Yallo. The cost increase for M-Budget Mobile is especially noticeable from 129 francs to 766 francs in the first year. This corresponds to a price increase of 22 percent.

Even for frequent users, none of the cheapest prepaid offers have become more expensive compared to the previous year.

Who lowered the prices?

A second trend can be seen in the price reductions: the cheapest subscription or prepaid offer from some mobile phone providers in Switzerland has even become cheaper compared to the previous year. At the same time, the research shows, some relatively cheap providers have further reduced their prices.

“Infrequent users pay less than last year for the cheap mobile phone subscription from the three providers Galaxus Mobile (compared to Digitec Connect), Mucho and Swisscom. Market leader Swisscom has introduced a new subscription that allows irregular users to pay 16.80 francs or 4 percent less in the first year than the year before. The prepaid offers from Sunrise and Wingo have also become cheaper.”
“For normal users, the cheapest mobile phone subscription in October 2023 of the four providers Galaxus Mobile (compared to Digitec Connect), Mucho, Swisscom and Wingo will be cheaper than in October 2022. The price reductions are significant: 48 percent for Galaxus Mobile, 27 percent at Mucho, 26 percent at Wingo and 25 percent at Swisscom. When it comes to prepaid offers, Sunrise and Wingo’s cheapest offering has become cheaper for regular users.
“Heavy users pay for the cheapest mobile phone subscription with Galaxus Mobile (compared to Digitec Connect) and Wingo less than a year ago: minus 61 percent for Galaxus Mobile and minus 45 percent for Wingo. At Wingo and Sunrise, the cheapest prepaid offer is now a quarter cheaper than a year ago.”

What does this have to do with inflation?

Mobile telephony providers like to justify price increases with inflation, i.e. a general increase in the price level. But telecom expert Ralf Beyeler says:

‘I find it hard to believe that. It doesn’t seem logical to me why the expensive offers would be more affected by inflation than the cheaper offers.”

It is striking that only the providers that were already among the more expensive last year increased their prices. No provider in the top third of the table increased their prices for the cheapest offer.

What about subscription promotions?

Moneyland identifies a third trend in promotions. It is said that providers are now increasingly saying goodbye to the promotions and instead relying on cheap regular prices.

What now?

The conclusion of the comparison service remains that mobile phone subscriptions from second and third brands from the three major mobile phone providers, but also from independent providers, are often significantly cheaper for customers.

Telecom expert Ralf Beyeler:

“The differences between the providers are enormous. By switching to a cheaper offer, customers can usually save several hundred francs.”

And now you!
