1. Iciest road: Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road (Canada)

This 568-kilometer-long highway in northern Canada has to be rebuilt every year and has been considered the world’s longest ice road since it was first used in 1982. Starting from Lake Tibbitt and ending at Lake Contwoyto, the highway crosses a total of 495 kilometers of frozen lake, supplying the major mines north of Yellowknife from January to March.

2. The draftiest street – Mae Klong Railway Market (Thailand)

In fact, Mae Klong Railway Market is a completely normal, chaotic market of which there are thousands in Thailand. But, as the name suggests, with one difference: Eight times a day, a train weighing several tons passes through the narrow market street, passing stalls, locals and astounding tourists with millimetric precision. Anyone who watches the videos on YouTube will be surprised that there have only been two deaths in all these years.

3. The most dangerous road: El Camino de la Muerte (Bolivia)

Death Road, as locals call it, connects La Paz, Bolivia’s government city, to Coroico, 60 kilometers away, and is 4,650 meters above sea level. Their narrow widths, steep slopes, rain, fog and poor road conditions caused 200 to 300 crash deaths each year. A modern bypass was opened in 2007; Since then, the Yungas Trail, as it is officially known, has served as a tourist magnet mostly for mountain bikers.

4. The road with the most bridges: Atlantic Coast Road (Norway)

Opened in 1989, Atlantic Way was named Norway’s “Building of the Century” in 2005. The 8.3-kilometer-long section passes over a total of eight bridges from the town of Vevang to Karvag, located on an island. The Atlantic Way is not only a tourist attraction but is also popular with locals due to its numerous fishing spots. The route is also the scene in the 2021 “James Bond” movie “No Time to Die.”

5. Steepest street: Baldwin Street (New Zealand)

Baldwin Street in Dunedin, New Zealand, is officially listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the steepest street in the world, with a slope of up to 35 percent. Due to the extreme slope, the surface is made of concrete rather than asphalt, which melts and slides down the road on hot days.

6. Fastest way: Bonneville Salt Flats Utah (USA)

Of course, the great salt desert in the north of the US state of Utah is not officially a road, but it always sets new speed records. As early as 1896, bicycle races were held on the Bonneville Salt Flats. In 1935, racing driver Sir Malcolm Campbell broke the 484 km/h (300 mph) record in his piston-engined Blue Bird. Gary Gabelich even frantically broke the 1000 km/h mark in 1970 with his Blue Flame rocket car.

7. Longest route: Panamericana (from North America to South America)

The Pan-American Highway stretches more than 30,000 kilometers from northern Alaska to the southernmost tip of Argentina, accounting for 75 percent of the Earth’s circumference, and crosses 17 states, six time zones and four climate zones. It is constantly navigable, except for a small section between the Panama Canal and the north of Colombia. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Yonge Street in Canada is officially the longest street in the world with a length of 1,896 kilometers.

8. Shortest street: Ebenezer Place (Scotland)

From the longest street in the world to officially its shortest: Ebenezer Place in the Scottish port city of Wick is – no joke – just 2.06 meters long and connects River Street with Union Street. The only address in Ebenezer Place is number 1, which belongs to Mackays Hotel. 1 bistro. In 1883, the local government forced the hotel’s former owner, Alexander Sinclair, to install a street sign on the short side of the building.

9. Narrowest street: Spreuerhofstrasse (Germany)

While there is plenty of space on Ebenezer Place, things get tight on the Spreuerhofstrasse in the old town of Reutlingen (D): The average width of the 50 meter long street is 40 centimeters and at the narrowest point only 31 centimeters! Spreuerhofstrasse was only officially included in the Guinness Book of Records in 2007, after the efforts of a tourism manager from Reutlingen. Since then it has become so popular that the vinyl sign has been stolen over 20 times! Finally, it was fixed with special screws.

10. Weirdest street: Lombard Street (USA)

Lombard Street is one of San Francisco’s most important traffic arteries and a feeder route to the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge. The 145-foot-long stretch of road between Hyde Street and Leavenworth Street is almost as well known; With its ten twists and turns, this section is unofficially considered the windiest road in the world. With its many colorful flower beds, Lombard Street is one of San Francisco’s most photographed attractions.
