Google has revised its Android mascot. The robot, dubbed Bugdroid, will no longer be just two-dimensional, but three-dimensional, making it more vibrant and dynamic, as the Alphabet Group announced in a blog post published Tuesday.
In addition, the Robo should be more diverse in its representations: no longer only appearing in green color, but alternatively also colorful and playful.
The 3D update is said to apply to both the logo and renderings of the full Bugdroid. The company has also modified the Android letters. Previously, the word Android was lowercase. From now on, the lettering will start with a capital letter.
Android 14 is coming
The new logo and mascot of the new Android 14 are expected to appear in full for the first time. That could appear on October 4, when Google plans to launch new Pixel smartphones.
With the preview of the new Android smartphones, Google is ahead of Apple, which will present the iPhone 15 next Tuesday, September 12.
The mascot’s new shape reflects “the playfulness people expect from Android,” says Google’s blog post, which also gives a few examples: the Bugdroid in rainbow colors, with spiky hair and an aerobic headband or in the grass, lightbulbs — and disco ball look.
In addition, the new 3D rendering allows “easily switching between digital and real environments”. So there is no longer a gap between the logo or the entire Bugdroid on a display and, for example, the mascot as a real character.
