Would you like to buy an electric car, but are they all too small? Certainly not this one

Spacious e-cars with space for at least seven people were very few. But the choice is slowly increasing. An overview.

Oliver Wietlisbach

The family is growing, the four-legged friend has to travel comfortably with you, there is often a lot to transport or the daughter’s football team has an away game. There are many reasons to look for a seven-seater electric family car with an extra-large trunk.

However, popular electric family cars such as Tesla’s Model Y, VW’s ID.4 or Skoda’s Enyaq offer space for up to five people. Should it be slightly larger, the selection becomes manageable.

After all, the range is becoming more diverse and the cheapest seven-seaters are no longer completely unaffordable. As a new car, they are available from 40,000 francs, with the third row of seats often only available at extra cost.

Citroen e-Berlingo

The electric CITROËN Ë-BERLINGO is available in 2 lengths and as a five- or seven-seater.

Citroën’s e-Berlingo is available in two lengths (4.40 or 4.75 metres). The spacious and relatively inexpensive Stromer can optionally be ordered with a third row of seats and seven seats. No less than 775 liters of luggage fits in the family car with the practical sliding doors on both sides. When the rear seats and the front passenger seat are folded down, the load volume increases to a whopping 4,000 litres.

Citroën's e-Berlingo trunk

Citroën specifies the range at 280 kilometers. This is considerably less than many other e-cars, but sufficient for the vast majority of daily journeys. Under ideal conditions, the 50 kWh battery can be charged to 80 percent in 30 minutes using the fast charger.

  • Range (WLTP): 280 km
  • Trunk volume: 775 or 1050 liters in the XL model (max. load volume: 4000 liters with folded seats)
  • Seats: 5 to 7
  • Price: from CHF 37,900

An alternative is the larger Citroën e-Spacetourer with space for up to nine people.

Kia EV9

Kia EV9

Kia’s upcoming electric flagship EV9 will come with three rows of seats. The five-meter-long mega-SUV should be available as a seven- or six-seater by the end of this year. The South Koreans have not yet communicated the price.

Kia EV9, in the six-seater version, the second row can be rotated 180 degrees.
Kia EV9, the four seats in the back can be folded completely.

The EV9 comes with 77 and 99 kWh batteries. The larger battery should enable a range of up to 541 kilometers.

  • Range (WLTP): 541 km
  • Trunk volume: unknown
  • Seats: 6 to 7
  • Price: unknown (the EV9 should be available from the end of 2023)

Mercedes EQV

To some extent, the Mercedes minivan is the larger luxury version of the Citroën e-Berlingo. Instead of five to seven, six to eight people fit in the electric V-Class. As expected, the Germans have a more elegant interior and the more powerful battery ensures a greater range.

Too expensive? Significantly cheaper electric family vans with only five seats are the new Mercedes EQT and the comparable Renault Kangoo, which is available from around 40,000 francs.

Opel Combo-e Life

The Opel Combo e-Life is available in two sizes, each with up to seven seats

The family car from Opel is available in both sizes, with five or seven seats. The space miracle technically corresponds to Citroën’s e-Berlingo and Peugeot’s e-Rifter, all of which come from the Stellantis group. The three high-roof station wagons have the same dimensions and differ only slightly in appearance and price.
