Elon Musk took one of the most profound steps Twitter by erasing blue bird logo for another black and white of a “X”, thereby taking his first step to turn X.com into a platform that goes beyond a social network and that in the future will end with the name Twitter itself.
The Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino he said in a message on the social network that “X is the future state of unlimited interactivity”and explained that in the near future it will include audio, video, direct messages, payments, and buying and selling “goods, services and opportunities” which will be “powered by artificial intelligence”.
“For years, fans and critics alike have pushed Twitter to dream bigger, innovate faster and reach its great potential. X will do that and more,” Yaccarino added.
The network changes every eight months
Ending up with a globally recognizable logo — something few brands achieve — it’s the most visual and recognizable change Musk has made since paying $44 billion for the social network last November, but it’s not the only big change.
In these eight months, at the same time, the executive director Tesla he laid off roughly three-quarters of Twitter’s staff; took the company public; removed the previous administration’s official bill verification system and replaced it with an $8 cash register.
But the changes aren’t just formal, they’ve also carried over to content, with political implications, as Musk has welcomed back online profiles that had been banned for hateful messages or misinformation, among other measures.
So many changes spooked companies that advertise online — the platform’s main source of revenue — costing the company a steep decline in advertising revenue.
These lapses can also cost you user dissatisfaction: The prestigious Pew Research Center reported last May that a quarter of Twitter users said they believed they would no longer use the platform within a year.
Amidst this lack of trust, Meta (parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, which also changed its name last year) published this month neithera social network very similar to Twitter.
Are tweets dead?
After the network design change, one of the most frequently read questions on the platform was: “what are tweets called now?” To which Musk replied “x”.
In April, Twitter ceased to be an independent company after merging with the new company X Corp.
Musk has a long and close connection with the letter X: X.com is the original name of the Paypal payment platform he founded; is in your company name SpaceX; in the name of one of the Tesla models; in the name of his artificial intelligence company, xAI, and is even part of the name of one of his children, X Æ A-12.
