Chinese automaker Human Horizons currently only has two electric models on the Chinese market: the sporty luxury sedan HiPhi Z and the crossover HiPhi X, which is based on the same electric platform as Tesla’s Model X. Both will launch by the end of the year to explore the European market in Germany and Norway.

While these two models are in the price segment in excess of 100,000 francs, Human Horizons is now focusing on a subclass volume with the new HiPhi Y. As an electric mid-size crossover, it celebrated its world premiere at this year’s Shanghai Motor Show.

Inspiration Tesla

Human Horizons builds on Tesla for its new e-models, not only in terms of model names, but also in terms of design. Similar to the Americans or Geely’s subsidiary Zeekr, Human Horizons is also targeting electric models from Polestar as well as European premium manufacturers Audi, BMW and Mercedes. Currently the most successful electricity producer in the Chinese premium segment, it seeks a foothold in the European market from its European base in Germany (it has a Human Horizons design and development center in Munich, among other locations).

The newly introduced HiPhi Y is designed as a luxury volume model and aims to attract new expectations with its design and high-tech equipment. The contactless opening and closing electric hinged doors, similar to the HiPhi X, are certainly eye-catching. The Model Y borrowed, among other things, its infotainment display and four-wheel steering from its older brother.

The ‘Flagship’, ‘Long Range’, ‘Elite’ and ‘Pioneer’ trim variants offer all of this as standard. The “Long Range” model is equipped with a 115 kWh battery pack and can travel up to 810 kilometers on one battery charge in the Chinese consumption cycle – in Europe this corresponds to about 700 kilometers. The standard battery in other configurations provides a range of over 500 kilometers thanks to its 76.6 kilowatt-hour capacity.

All-wheel drive versions, each with front and rear electric motors, have peak power of up to 505 hp (371 kW) and accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds (top speed: 205 km/h). Rear-wheel drive variants with only one rear electric motor deliver 335 hp (247 kW). HiPhi is still silent on exact dimensions, more detailed technical information or selling prices. However, with its default price of CHF 35,000 equivalent, the HiPhi Y should be significantly cheaper than the first two models, according to the Chinese information platform CnEVpost. At the same time, if he wants to reach the expected quantities, he is obliged to do so.

Next spring, the HiPhi Y will follow its older brothers to Europe, intensifying electricity competition there, according to its Chinese owners. The new mid-size crossover will be manufactured in the Chinese port city of Qingdao and will soon roll off the production line with 120,000 cars each year. They can also save time by parking these vehicles in the warehouse immediately after production – Human Horizons is thinking big.
