The station wagon segment may have lost many customers to the ubiquitous SUVs. But they’re usually ahead when it comes to loading volume. Because family carriers with large flaps – unlike upright SUVs – extend longitudinally, the optional third row of seats takes up no space and is often as versatile as a minivan, with folding and folding rear seats. Here are the loadmasters in the station wagon class:

Due to its flat roof and slender body, it would never make it to the list in this ranking. With the rear seats up, the 487-litre Peugeot 508 SW is also further rearward – but only holds a maximum of 1537 litres. Bigger inside than outside. The Skoda Octavia Combi is just ahead of the BMW. With a loading volume of 640 to 1700 liters, it takes the lead. And it makes many large models look small. The basic version of the revised Octavia model with 115 hp (85 kW) – manual – is available starting at CHF 37,800.

A classic among station wagons, the VW Passat Variant was once a co-founder of the mid-range load master segment. And meanwhile it saved VW from bankruptcy. It is in fourth place with a loading volume of 650 to 1780 liters. Rolling legend is available from CHF 47,000. But it is available manually with 150 hp (110 kW). Now also available as a hybrid (pictured).

When Mercedes’ first T model appeared in the 1970s, the fan base groaned: A starry craftsman’s car? The current E-Class has been around for a long time and now comes as an AMG variant from the Mercedes sports department. Entry-level model with 160 hp (118 kW) capacities from 640 to 1820 litres, starting at CHF 65,900. If you want it as a hybrid variant, you pay from 86,000 francs.

Another surprise: Subaru’s Outback easily ranks second in loadspace with 561 to 1822 liters. Does it look like an SUV? But it’s not, it’s an all-terrain chassis and all-wheel drive station wagon. The 169 hp (124 kW) SUV station wagon is available from CHF 45,900.

When it comes to interior space, this model is unrivaled: with a loading volume of 660 to 1950 litres, the recently revised Skoda Superb Combi easily takes first place. What’s surprising: Even when it comes to backseat space, it’s just the Rolls-Royce Phantom and Co. it can deceive. Not available as an off-road version. Between 150 HP (110 kW) and station wagons, the charging winner is offered with prices starting from CHF 50,620.
